New Zealand bans smoking.......

Hard one for me this, the libertarian part of me totally agrees with you but the logical progression is that we allow drugs which I wouldn’t like to see.

I not going to say it won’t work because they managed it in pubs and restaurants here and that would have been unthinkable at one time but now it’s normal.

What it will definitely do is create a criminal market which isn’t a good thing when so many countries (and I’m assuming New Zealand isn’t exempt) already have their hands full fighting drugs.

Complicated mate…….at the minute smoking is only of detriment to those who do it, everything else about it in terms of revenue generated is great.

This will see it become something else imho……..the bootlegger will be gearing up for a bonanza !

For me it’s not about being a libertarian, well not entirely ? it’s got a lot to do with logic and common sense.

If we were fighting ANY war for as long as we have been fighting the ‘war on drugs’ using the same tactics and were losing more and more ground every year ...... we’d be having a good talk about employing new tactics! The war on drugs is no different. Our draconian tactics simply do not work. Drugs are readily available to pretty much anyone with an extremely low chance of getting caught. The money all goes into the hands of the wrong folk and is used to fund other stuff which is far worse. It eats a huge amount of police time and resources and the government misses out on lots of tax. And of course it’s more dangerous when it’s unregulated and controlled. Most of the harm caused in society by drugs is due to them being illegal.

I suppose if I had to really look at it I’d think about it like this.

Nobody ever:

Wrote off a family in a car completely off their face on 20 bensons

They didn’t have reduced reaction time

They never couldn’t get out of bed in the morning

They never had slurred speech

They never OD’ed

They never slouched around in some unmotivated slow motion state

They never knocked f**k out of their old woman because they had one too many fags

So I suppose in my mind, fags are shit but they ain’t drugs or booze.

Just look at alcohol related deaths compared to smoking related deaths in the UK, it's not even close mate.

No it's not the same, not even close mate.

I drank 8 cans of Stella last weekend at home, that didn't harm my kids, it only harmed my wife after I knocked the fcuk out of her.

You get my point though, it isn't the same.

Could be argued that it did harm your kids.

instead of being up and about early bells spending quality time with your children, possibly out for a nice walk in the countryside, you were laid upstairs in your piss.

I smoked a fag earlier on in a 100 acre field on my own ....... how did that do m more harm than you drinking 8 cans of Stella ?

A panel of scientists and social scientists ranked alcohol as THE most socially harmful of all drugs.

No, I’m sure it’s not mate but that’s only effecting the people dying if you get my drift

What about the people who it's killed indirectly or the illnesses it's given kids?

No, to be fair I think that’s a bit of an urban myth on balance.

I drank a crate in an empty field all on my own, how did that do more harm than smoking ten roll ups?

You know that the reactions from drinking and the effects of passive smoking are completely different even if you won't admit it.

Is it, what makes you say that?

The stats say that passive smoking kills almost the same amount of people as alcohol does in the UK.
