Swmac 24
Found these in an old cow shed over the weekend, anyone able to put a date on them? 1 Quote Link to post
BenBhoy 4,706
I'd say @Sausagedog and @Dervburner be your best bet 1 Quote Link to post
Sausagedog 7,381
Looks like war issue stuff to me. ICI made good ammo. Looks well kept. The lead usually oxidises. Could be army training ammo. I see a few eley mixed in them. Is there a date on the box? Quote Link to post
Gav 1,708
The brass and lead on the Eleys looks pretty recent compared to the ICI. 1 Quote Link to post

They are certainly of an age, and a mixed lot, it looks like one near the bottom left/side has 2 x firing pin marks on the case??? If they have been in a cow shed a long time, they may still go bang, but I suspect the years and atmosphere will have taken their toll, but who know until you give them a try. I have some Radway Green 7.62 from 1985, it is still superb and consistent, but it has been stored appropriately! 1 Quote Link to post
3175darren 1,100
I remember the old man having a tin of 22 shorts you don’t see them anymore, he gave me these after he handed his shotgun ticket in 1 Quote Link to post
Sausagedog 7,381
.22 shorts are still made. My local has some s&b in stock. 1 Quote Link to post

I found them a little inconsistent in the 457. I shot a lot of old eley shorts recently and they were excellent except they were solids and hence worse on varmints than an air rifle! Yerr, not too good for distance SD, but good for rats on the embankment, as well as the odd rabbit that’s turns up. They were dirt cheap as well. The rws shorts I had were more accurate, and faster, but quite a bit more expensive. I’ve had the eley .22 short high velocity which were good, but no longer available unless you can happen on some old stock. CCI do a hollow point short, but sourcing them isn’t easy. The last ones I’ve seen were at forest lodge guns a few years ago. 1 Quote Link to post
