Samrog 425
Evening all, Advice please … me dogs run into some barbed wire after a rabbit and this is the outcome? I’ve cleaned it and keep applying antiseptic powder. He doesn’t seem in any pain or any difference in him at all. I’m not a scrimper just wonder if it’s a vet job I’ll go first thing in the morning? Should I wrap it or keep it open? Edited November 13, 2021 by Samrog Quote Link to post

Luckee legs 471
Agree keeping it clean with antiseptic powder or spray is critical. The one watch out I have for you is a rip doesn't have to be much deeper to be worth stitching. (Although as you can see from your dog the skin is usually thin and it's not easy). Even if they can't stitch a deeper wound it may benefit from antibiotics, years ago I was saving a few quid taking a risk not going to vet with a rip on dogs back and deep bacteria infection made the recovery much longer than it should have taken. Was explained to me It's not that barbed wire has to be dirty, its just as likely bacteria was on the dogs skin and got pushed in Quote Link to post
Greb147 6,809
Horrible stuff, I can remember my collie cross getting tangled up in the stuff years ago. He was a capable jumper for the most part but sometimes when jumping gates he would sometimes spring off the top of them, well on this day he tried doing the same with a bit of loose barbed wire. Ended up falling arse over tit and the wire was wrapped that tight in the skin he was almost suspended, he could only hold himself up by the toes of his back legs. His skin was wrapped that tight I could not free him, in the middle of nowhere with nobody in sight. I made the decision to walk to my grandparents to get some snips and just had to tell the dog to stay, well did he fcuk, as I was walking away I heard a loud snap, he'd broke himself loose. He had a horrendous tear in the skin and the barbed had damaged the shoulder muscle, did no lasting damage in the end. Edited November 14, 2021 by Greb147 Quote Link to post
poxon 5,741
That’s nothing mate it’s just a scrape of the fur it’s not broken the skin. Always good to keep abrasions clean but will be ready to run again in a couple of days no problem Quote Link to post
