Asking on behalf of a friend??

Of course.

To be fair the one i had was second hand and may well of been on the verge of being shot out. Edgar bros say they are only good for 7k rounds and i later found out the bloke i had it off was forever out shooting. He would spend ages shooting at targets. I only ever shot winchester 17grn through it because he said that is what it prefered i never tried 20 grn.

My 452 liked the Winchester 20gn but I didn't like the dud rounds! So I went the hornady 20gn.

For target shooting I believe most are getting higher than stated velocities from cci 20g fmj. Some have clocked 2600÷!

In the Rimfire category as you requested......WMR.

The WMR went out of favour in the UK with the introduction of the HMR just over 20 years ago, but the WMR has always been popular in the USA and the last 20 years has seen some cracking WMR ammo developments.

Love mine!

I am not sure yet. Will the wmr be flat enough for me, would i be double disappointed if i decided to try another hmr.

?????

There is more variety of WMR ammo than HMR, there are some very heavy WMR which hit hard but are not even close to flat.

On the other hand, my go to WMR ammo these days is the 30g V-Max, which flies "VERY CLOSE " to the 17g HMR V-Max out to about 100yards.   I've tried a few over the years and this is just some I seem to have left over!!

My last WMR loved the CCI 40g below,

and it was QUITE flat, but my latest WMR didn't get on so well with those!

It's all down to what you need and what works for you, I have .22lr, HMR and WMR and they all have a place for me!

Winchester are the worst in my hmr, in fact it shoots pretty well with every other brand. I think all brands of hmr except Winchester are manufactured by cci anyway? I too found the 20 grain slightly more accurate than the 17 grain offerings, but they aren’t as frangible.

Just tell me how bad that first hmr was again?

It sounds like it was really bad from here!

I love wmr and could not accept that hmr could ever be near as good but I bit the bullet so to speak and have had to eat my own words. I do think hmr is better than wmr for what I do!

To be honest, I've never heard anyone bad mouth 22 wmr or 17 hmr!

The one i had was horrible. I took the lad out that used to own it foxing one night and he hit a three quarter grown cub in the bib at 1oo yds. It didn't kill it and he finished up using the rest of the magazine on it trying to kill it. Then he hit a vixen in the head right between the eyes at 70yds and it just stunned it. It got up eventually and ran off like nothing had happened. That put me right off them for fox. I struggled with it getting an acceptable group in windless conditions and any breeze at all forget it.

However the one i had could of been on the verge of being shot out. Lots of lads have told me how much they like theirs but i haven't tried one since. I have seen quite a few come into my mates rfd shop that have been the victims of the dodgy ammo fiasco but he hasn't had one for some time. I wonder if that particular problem has gone away. I may have just been unlucky and had a shit rifle putting me off the calibre.

Hmm,  I have shot many now in the bib, most go down, some go on a death run.

Some get a second shot just because.

I never recommend head shots with anything on fox and deer but that  does not mean I never, I just don't recommend it, heads move around to much!

Most side on shots they go straight down.

If you can't get close to half moa groups something is wrong.

They have improved the brass yes.

OK so I just picked up a new 455 in hmr and 500rds of various ammo makes.

I built the rifle up  and zeroed at 25 paces.

Got it something like and moved to 50 paces and shot this off a tripod.

Best I ever did with the HMR at 100 yards.

4 shots, I bottled out of the 5th, and frankly I've never tried again!

To be honest I have always found the HMR has the edge on the WMR for accuracy, but only just, its very close!

I have never found the 20g FMJ/hollow point HMR any good on fox, but the 17G V-Max has always done me well.
