FAC slot to fill, which calibre?

Recommended Posts

My cert is up for renewal next summer and i still have a slot to fill. I recently filled my 243 slot and i have one for a .22 semi auto plus mod. Now i know i don't want a .22 s/a that's for sure. There aren't the rabbit numbers for that. But i did fancy a rimfire really as i can't be bothered to load for another c/f. I quite fancied a WSM but they only come in a savage rifle that i don't want. I wouldn't mind a Ruger precision but not in .22lr. Whatever i get will need to be fox capable up to 100yds, decisions, decisions!

If you really fancy a rimfire, you don’t want the savage (wmr), you don’t like hmr, and you don’t want it in .22lr, fox capable at 100 yards then it’s got to be .22 magnum?

personally, I’d go for .22 hornet, even though you don’t want to reload, there’s an incentive as they’re cheaper to run than the magnum rimfires if you do.

Lotta predator calling guys over this way are liking the .17wsm. apparently really flat shooting and good on fur damage as long as you keep it off the shoulder. Other then that .17 hornet seems very economic once you get all the reloading stuff

I have thought about the 22 hornet having used one before but the reloading puts me off. Amongst other things i would use it for a couple of the grandkids to shoot, so i would be forever reloading.

If the WSM was in a different rifle to the current savage it would certainly be a contender but i couldn't live with that savage bolt.

I have done the .17 hornet thing and found it really hit and miss to load for. I used lil gun at the time but other people are having better success using different powders now. I once managed to buy quite a lot of hornady factory ammo for it on special offer and that was great but to use it again would be really uneconomical as the price has rocketed. Once the factory stuff had been used i sold the rifle which was a cz.

Why's that Ian?

Because i am loading for 30/06, 243, 204. If i take a couple of grandkids out for a bit of hardox fox target shooting they may do 100 rounds between them and i can't really be arsed doing that many every week. I would sooner buy a few boxes of something "oven ready".

Are they quite flat shooting?

What weight of bullet are you using in your hmr.

Wmr is sound over 100 yds. 2-3" of trajectory or there abouts with 30gn to 40gn bullets. About 6" of hold will have you on at 150 or there abouts.

I was using 20g in the hmr but when I got the 457 it didn't like them so I went to 17gn. I was worried about performance on fox but I needn't of been!

I'm on at 100yds, about 2" down at 150 and -6"@200. It follows the hawk vantage reticle very closely. On a calm day I can shoot at small pebbles in the berm and get close enough to make it interesting!

Furthest crow to date is 180 paces, and I don't mean ballet dancers tip toe steps!
