micky 3,325
I don't suppose there are many people left who used them or saw them being used , they had their uses but has a Rabbit trap but they were non starters in my opinion though back in the day there was not much else available .? 2 Quote Link to post
Borr 6,120
I've heard of them set in numbers in a stink pit being very effective, but unnecessary in this day and age..... Quote Link to post
EDDIE B 3,166
In my opinion, the Gin was one hell of a trap. The concept was that good, that very similar designs are still being used in several country's today. They were made in many different sizes to catch animals as small as a mouse, and as large as a badger, and they worked very very well. We tend to dismiss the idea of foot hold traps over this side of the waters, but there really is no contest, when it comes to catch rate for most species, compared to any other type of trap. I recon the Gin was as good a trap for catch rate, as any modern trap. 1 Quote Link to post
OldPhil 5,799
Both my Father, and Grandfather, used them for rabbits... I had a wee spell with them myself on the sandy soil, but I found them to be real heavy old lumps of iron to lug around... Mind you, I suppose the same could be said of the Imbra and Juby,...they are also a bit on the weighty side... Both those canny traps, were good catchers of rabbits, but in truth,...the old Gin trap didn't miss much... I've also had a go with a few modern footholds, and I reckon the Gin would have survived a few years longer IF, those toothed jaws had been flat, like a 'Cushion Catch'. Interesting subject... Wolfdog91 7,101
Somone say foot holds ? There amazing and humane as all get out if set up properly ( swivels off sets laminations ect). Problem is using them on prey species is the initial 5min or so after their caught. Even though their not injured something jumping out if the ground and grabbing them makes them make well, let's just say every fox within a acre or two will know their caught. 1 Quote Link to post
OldPhil 5,799
This also happens when rabbits and hares, hit a wire,...ya got to get, out and about , or the early bird will take your catch... 1 Quote Link to post
