Your doctor cannot disclose or copy the records or show any part of them to the police. The police are given permission to obtain a medical report from your doctor which can be factual only. ie the doctors report will be a list of any relevent attendances eg. Attended doctor on 12.10.21 - complained of low mood, Attended on 05.04.19 - suffering symptoms of anxiety,.... The doctor is not allowed to give an opinion as to whether or not the facts affect your ability to hold a licence. The whole point of this system is it take bias out of the equation. If the police are concerned about the entries, then they can seek their own opinion from an appointed expert. At least that's my understanding of how it works. Then I stand corrected, thanks. It's a shame the law did not command the police to approach the gp of an applicant instead of the vague request for permission! 1 Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
It's one of those where you need to be careful. Some forces ask for permission to obtain your medical records. I understand you should refuse such a request but instead grant them permission to obtain a medical report. At least that's the advice I was given some time ago assuming nothing's changed in what they're permitted to see. I can't see the law granting them full access. As with everything fireams, some forces seem to simply make their own rules up. Don't forget if you give them permission to see your medical records they get to see everything confidential about your health not just items that might affect your suitability.
