Ken's Deputy 4,460
I tend to leave my small bags of spuds and onions on the counter, next to my sink. They just sit there and get used in due course. I made a lovely, rustic, box for my spuds. Drilled plenty of vents in the back. Drawer at the bottom for my onions. Within a week, the fukking spuds were lifting the lid with tendrils. And I now keep far too many onions to cram into that drawer! I've scoured Amazon. But, it's all plastic / coated racks 'n shit. Look horrible in my cottage kitchen. Anyone got any ideas for a nice, rustic thing I might knock up, please? It seems they do best in full, natural light? I'm very aware though of having onions exposed, at dog level. Brainstorm?
Arry 23,332
Why not string up your Onions Ken? Cheers Arry

mushroom 13,527
Must be the temp or the type I buy because mine get crappy after a couple of months here.
Astanley 11,588
String the onions up ,cover the spuds with straw and a bit of soil in a wooden box . If for whatever reason you find yourself shitting on them ,dispose of them safely and immediately.
Ken's Deputy 4,460
Yeah. I s'pose onions have pretty much always been put on strings, haven't they. Obviously doesn't matter that they touch each other then. Now, bouncing off that concept ~ and because my singers aren't as dexterous as they used to be. And my eyes are fukked; I'm thinking avout a shelf bracket, screwed to my kitchen cupboard. Hang the fuckers from that, in a purse net. Stop then pressing against a wall. Be next to a north facing window. Think that would matter? Spuds, I tend to use less of, thus they sit around longer and grow legs. They usually last as well as need, just sat on the side with the bag ripped open. Just that I want that side cleared now. I also like nice things. I've had a Road To Damascus event. Now, I'm having the time of my life, sorting my shit out

chartpolski 25,778
With onions, stick to "Occams Rule"; the simplest answer is usually the correct one; hang onions in a cool, dark, ventilated place, and they will last a long time I dont grow patatoes because the effort/reward ratio is to big, just buy as needed. Cheers.

Ken's Deputy 4,460
True, D. That's the new way. For a couple of quid, for the amount I get through, though? I just buy a small bag. And chuck half of the things away, anyway! Onions sorted though

chartpolski 25,778
Not nit-picking, but the onions would be better in a net bag or hung up not bagged. Better air circulation. Cheers.
