Really like this thread ,I don't do any shooting now but I take my young bitch out with katty and she retreaves anything that's taken .

That sounds like what I do these days, mooching with a flask of tea, rucksack and catapult. I must admit Im a bit soft these days and tend not to kill much with the catapult, unless I fancy putting something on the menu for myself. My dogs however are squirrel mad. The springer lurcher has caught more squirrels than the rest of the dogs I’ve had over the past 35 years put together....Christ knows what she’d be like if I started dropping them for her.

It never stops amazing me how the squirrels can be totally safe from the dogs, but then you get the odd one that panics, runs down the trunk and heads for another tree. I must confess the other day a squirrel out sprinted the dogs up a steep banking.....was quite funny to watch.

When hunting squirrels in woodland, I school the dogs to 'go round' and stand opposite to me...

The Greys frequently try to hide behind the trunk of the tree, and they will often keep moving around, as you move...

The dogs looking up at them,..fool them, and then the bushy tails generally offer a nice easy target..

As for gundog based lurchers,.. I used to have some grand old times walking out with Thistle...

She was a Whippet /Grey x Labrador and I saw her catch all manner of critters

Her retrieving was, as expected,..totally on point,..and she was a joy to hunt alongside...

Love getting out with the catty on the greys and pheasants  ,my bedy grey loves squirrel hunting and after she got bit by first one she got the knack of taking them ,

My bitch done same thing ,chased a squirrel feeding in-between two trees and turned it twice and ffing thing still made the tree

Couldn't agree more. When the number of rabbits around by me dried up, I was gutted at first but, as the kelpies gradually shifted to wood pigeons and squirrels I'm actually finding it even more fun. We don't catch as many but the "near misses" and the trying are a joy to watch. I've always found that all my dogs seem to be more excited by squirrels than any other prey...though Scout found rats a close second.

What Phil said about the squirrels rings so true. The dog marked one up a tree in a hedge row once and what ever side I went the squirrel shuffled around the other side . I could only ever see a bushy tail. We kept this up for an age as I was determined. I turned around and the dog had gone and then ten minutes later he came trotting back with his own squirrel as if to say your pretty shite at this so this is how you do it. Bloody smart arse

Iv seen some real handy gwp over the years n recently been going out with a couple of wire haired vislas which really Impressive
