The lad I bought her from wanted a fox dog and said this Cairn was only good after rabbits in thick cover, he wanted rid and as I wanted a rabbit dog and took her on. When we were out the people thought she was a ladies lap dog, "cute" and quite small. After about a week or two I went out with some guys and they wanted fox, this was my introduction and I was hooked. She went in no trouble and from that day on I had loads of fox. She was only bitten once by a very large dog fox, which I shot, but we had three full grown from that one set. She was such a clever worker and backed off or went in as and when needed. She knew what to do and she did it. She was a good steady worker not in slightest bit nasty nor to hard. I kept her in my home with my two young children and she never bothered them or anyone else, even if they tormented her. She did have short legs however and I worried she may get stuck underground as a result. She didnt. That dog taught me so much and I never will be lucky enough to have another like her again. Trust your dog is a good motto, they know best and she taught me not the other way round. Good luck if you do get one and I hope you will enjoy it as I did mine. Quote Link to post

stringer9 0 Posted January 16, 2008 Report Share Posted January 16, 2008 (edited) i have a westie that i dig to and she ssgood on the bunnies too. shes clever enuogh to know fox from rabbit and what we are hunting and when. my dad bred cairns for years. him self and his friend worked them for countless years and by that i ment digging. He killed songbirds, Thrushes and Blackbirds mainly and left them in a big pile behind the shed !! I watched him stalk them the freak ! He killed dozens of squirells every year as well as mice and rats but would never entertain going to ground. His temperament was however his shotcoming and from experience the majority of Westies/Cairns tend to be nasty bity little fcukpigs !!! A clever but spiteful little cnut he surely was !! So Shepp...................... they're not and never will be for me !!! Besides which I find it hard to call any small dog a terrier which is not at home underground Quote Link to post

As she's quite small she'll happily crawl under pallets on our yard to get to the dirty buggers. She loves to have a good rag up. Quote Link to post
