Typically What does a estate gardener do on an estate

Apart from obviously gardening. Is an estate gardener given any other duties. Does he have to learn various other skills to help gamekeepers, farmers, etc when manpower is low? 

 

What sort of skills should one learn to get in to this sort of life as a estate gardener etc.

I imagine you’d be called to different departments to make up the slack at various times of the year. Or maybe not if the house is depending on veg.. or if the lady of the house requires special attention

The estate I work on has a self employed guy that cuts grass , trims hedges, strims . In the winter they keep him going clearing and digging . But there are two “ maintenance “ workers who cut trees , fix  fences , drive tractors etc . A chainsaw Lantra certificate would be good . The more versatile and willing to put your hand to anything, the more valuable you will be to an estate. On the other hand there was an old boy who worked here for years and all he would do was drive a tractor. So that is all he did, who’s the idiot ?

It is what it is, if the keeper likes you he might ask for help same for the others but if it’s a gardener your going too be that’s exactly what you will be
