finally something worth talking about!!

Recommended Posts

This rookie finally has something to post that i am not too embarassed about :icon_redface:

I am new to this ferreting lark, this is my first season, and the guy that I thought might show me the ropes is too worried about someone else stealing his permission :censored: so I am teaching myself. Its a lot harder than i thought but is starting to become very rewarding. My two ferrets, George and Mildred, have got there own personalities and spending time with them is more enjoyable than i thought it would be.

On my first trip out with them I had ten nets, and a farmer that I know had told me of some rabbits not to far from my house. So of I went, not really expecting much but hoping for one of those awesome bags i had been reading about :tongue2:

I caught one rabbit :notworthy: and my first thought was 'I AM A HUNTING GOD'. then I was brought down to earth as double figure rabbits escaped out of holes I had not seen or even had any idea to look for  Who knew rabbits had a bit of smarts about there bolt holes :o

Anyway, that number ONE seemed to dominate my excursions after that, but at least I was catching and the ferrets seemed to be good at there job, even if I wasn't

Then I found RABBITEERS net making vid, complete with light sabers, and I suddenly found something else I was interested in. My number of nets are slowly but surely increasing and the first warren I had visited, which I later found to have around 30-40 holes, is now being netted properly, at least I think it is, and on sunday I actually caught more than one rabbit :toast::clapper:

OK it was only three but I was chuffed. None escaped out of holes I had not netted and george stayed until I was pretty sure there were no more rabbits down there. I say that because I think I have the area figured out. its an old dumping ground for the farmer and there are at least four seperate warrens down there. Two I can do, one is in a large area of gorse and one is in the tip itself and I have not plucked up the courage to send my ferrets down there yet. Maybe I am being too protective but it does not look particularly safe for me or them. Thats probably exactly where they all are but once i purchase a lamp then I will be down There with my newly purchased air rifle to get them :gunsmilie:

On a different topic, I was called through to my bedroon the other day by my wife. Reading that on its own may make it sound like my luck was in, but it was more like a scream of 'GET THROUGH HERE, THAT BLOODY CATS BROUGHT IN A LIVE RAT AGAIN!'.

So off I duly went and found that it was not a rat but a weasel. A little brown thing about a quarter the size of my jill. It had blood on its chest from a small puncture wound from the cat and it was hardly breathing. So I picked it up by the scruff and walked down the stairs. The little bugger was only kidding on and as I opened the back door it suddenly tried to eat my fingers and I duly dropped it. It went straight under the ferret court and started making one hell of a racket. It turns out my jill was afraid of the noise and would not come out but, :boxing: George to the rescue. Out he came and under he went but the little fecker was too fast and bolted to the wood pile.

Ah, thought I, time for the big guns and away went George and out came the terriers. In they went and this little thing went nuts. Jumping out from between logs and trying to bite the dogs, brave little barsteward. Lucky too, it found a gap down to the back of the logs and by the time the terriers and I got down to the bottom it had managed to escape :bye:

I read up a little on them and found out that they like to eat moles, so good luck to him/her cause those gits are causing holy hell in my lawn.

Right, Nuff chat I have gone offshore again so will probably be on here every day as out here can be tremendously dull.

All the best to all :drink: ,

Steve.

good read mate, keep at it, that gorse bush of yours needs a longnet run round it, so start reading up in the longnetting section

I am hoping that night and a good lamp will help because the gorse covers a very large area, too big for a long net I think but i am only guessing due to my obvious lack of experience

Nice story!

I don't go in for big numbers either.Same as fishing from an isolated piece of coast or pigeon shooting in the woods.

For me the enjoyment is in pitting my wits against rabbits, mullet or pigeons in their own environment.

And as for the thrill the first time YOUR ferret bolts a rabbit into a net which YOU made!

Nothing like it!

Mooster.
