gnipper 6,504
We have lots of 100 yard, 15 -20ft high alder hedges at work as windbreaks to shelter our crops, easier to cut than neat privet and beech etc but still not fun with a petrol hedge cutter. Some of ours are birch and hornbeam which are hard to cut. They get cut every year in autumn when birds have finished nesting.

Ken's Deputy 4,460
Gnip; Don't worry, mate. If a bird was so much as Looking at that hedge? I'd fukking know about it! Anyway, as it happens? It's all more to do with the continuing creation of a canine Colditz. Next job is to lay a fukking Mesh along the top of it! Let the hedge grow up through that. Fukking Poxy little small dog I have here is breath taking! Pit bred pocket rocket. She gets fired up? Fukked if I know what'll keep her in! And she takes the other one with her. And so, such is my life now. I spend £Hundreds and hundreds. And most of my waking hours, trying to figure out where the little kunt might next escape from. And trying to block that. Honestly; I fukking swear I could qualify for a Dangerous Wild Animal license. Go over my place with a fine tooth comb and you'd never find a spot this little kunt could escape from. Until, this evening, the fukking kunting thing was on top of my fukking hedge!!! Yes. I'm pricing up Electric Fencing, as we speak!!! Kunting Fukking Thing!!!

And this is actual, purpose made chapati flour. Made, apparently, to fill the need of the 'South Asian Community' of Britain. God knows, I've tried about everything else. Just can't get it right yet

Regular trimming does no harm because you are only removing outer very new growth. It encourages thicker and better cover in shrubbery and hedges, but apart from that the gardeners job is to tend the shrubs etc first, but as I say its cutting thats bad for them not trimming.

I usually just trim the top leafs on mines but looking out to admire my work tonight the hedge has doubled in width since we moved in. Wait until winter and just cut it back hard, top and sides. Whatever the hedge it will obviously look a bit stark at first but will soon leaf up. It happen to all hedges and shrubs, it just creeps up on you. Remember to do it before the end of February. Forgot to say make sure you cut evenly off sides to keep it balanced. Stand well back to see your progress. Edited June 30, 2021 by jeemes
