Prazsky krysarik

The beauty of terriers bred for purpose rather than to breed standards is that they come in all sizes. Seen some very useful very small Russell types. Probably a better proposition than the breed under discussion? I would think, but have no knowledge or experience of Prazsky Kysarik. Looks like a toy Manchester terrier. A Czech breed?

You have caught me out there huckelbery. The picture is from an old book to illustrate the type but thinking about it, I have not seen a working strain/family of them.

There are still many of them about in the UK but as far as I know, and I do not have my finger on the pulse, but they seem to pet bred these days. I did own one of that type briefly.

He was owned by a family that wanted a cute pet to play with when they could be bothered but to make himself invisible when they could not be bothered. They should have got an hamster or a goldfish rather than a terrier. I was asked to find him a good home and he stayed with me for several months. He was about 9" tts and aprox 11/12 lb.

He came out with the others on exercise and joined in when rabbits, rats and other stuff were found on walks. He most certainly had a high prey drive. Too high for a terrier of his size and his attitude to work. He was unfortunately a disruptive influence in kennels, hardly surprising given his education and I was not a skilled enough dog trainer to make him right. And he was way too small. But he ended up in a good home and lived a few more but brief happy years,

5/5,5 kg is allready  quite a bit smaller than my small patterdale i got right now. stil not near the weight of the praagse ratler though but with a jack russel i at least know that it could be a great ratter with the smaller praagse ratler i also have my doubt. not so much due to size(my way smaller ferrets also handle rats fine) but more because of some described caracter things of the praagse ratler.

That's just it. Plenty of miniature Russell out there, but bred for the pet industry. You might be lucky to get one with good prey drive, but most would rather be on the couch.

My uncle did have a little russell types at one time, that threw very small offspring. They had plenty of drive, but their size wasn't a positive aspect in the digging game.

The real question is, does a smaller dog, make a better ratter?

if a smaller breed will make a better ratter. i don;t know but for me in at least some cases it would probably help. one reason  there will fit more dogs in my ratting  side car rig  if the dogs are smaller. but for me the main reason for me is that a smaller dog is able to chase the rats down in smaller more narrow spaces. i alllready see a lot of profit in my smaler paterdale terrier compared to my bigger kooiker x boerenfox. the patterdale can go inside a lot of places that the boerenfox x kooiker can't. an other extra advantage is that i need to climb a lot with my dogs and in some cases i hold the dogs up in the air to wait for the right moment to release them  when the rats are far enough from their safe places. and a smaller lighter dog will also  help with that.
