I remember driving to malham the very next day after I passed my driving test, AA road atlas just me on my own  and my young Hancock bitch on backseat of a battered old banger. After reading hoskers articles.

You didn't happen to know a guy nicknamed Cloggsy GC from Failsworth or miles platting?

? Taken a lot of rabbits over the last 60 years with various working dogs,....but, under the spotlight,..I would think that 78 with my Sadie , back in the 1980's would be the most that I've grassed in

try again.. 63 taken the night before ....took this pic before we set off ferreting

It's not allways about numbers. Not to long ago, I was lucky enough to be invited to the Cairngorms for a weekend, by Northernlite and Taysider. We had a fantastic time, but one naysayer moc

Tommy was a harvester of rabbits,.. he regarded the rabbiting business, in much the same way as pro-fisherman would think of the day's catch. It was all , strictly business...

Same with the dogs, (they were nearly all called Ruby, mostly Red in hue, and invariably, for sale)..

The man still is, a good handler of Sheepdogs, and has sold a few, for absolutely phenomenal money?

Personally,. I found Caithness, and the surrounding area to be a strange old place,..  I killed game, in quantity and filled my boots, as did everyone else, but compared to other locations in the UK,..it was never on my list of places, that I would like to settle in...?

However, the 1980's was a great time for the Lurcherman?

The first, lurcher related books, were offered up and sporting magazines were, at last,.. giving the rabbiting and coursing man a fair bit of print space, and of course, the mass gathering of enthusiasts at the various shows, was in full swing...

I think we all look back on those Halcyon Days, with rose coloured spectacles, and a warm heart....

However, .. things weren't always,. what they seemed..?.

So, what you say is very true, especially the last statement

To my mind, anyone who spent 2 weeks of every month 8 months of the year catching rabbits or foxes fora living as I did, things were very different to how people imagine.

Secondly anyone who had dealing with b plumber and the likes was highly likely to be scarred by the experience.                                                                                   Sadly these people had a nasty web that spread far and wide and they reached out and stung people for no reason in particular, jealousy was often the cause but not always.

As for Tommy, yes he caught rabbits for a living and he was good at his style of hunting and as you say everything was for sale. I like Tommy but I was at odds with the way he started dogs and age etc, most were blown by the age my dogs were coming into their own.

Caithness is a marmite county, some people fall in love with it, others dislike it.  Strangely i stay in two places and love them both, Caithness and the New forest. both are very different.

Sensible and poignant words Levigsp?

So refreshing, to hear such words from someone who obviously,. .knows the score...?

Didn't Tommy mcphee sell his bitch Ruby I think her name was? To some lads from Wales?

A lad from Rotherham brought an adult bitch back with him after going on a lamping holiday up their a stamina packed small whippet type that was bred and produced in further generations some decent dog's.
