villaman 9,983
Probably another reason not to shoot jays Half the trees in two new English woodlands planted by jays, study finds | Trees and forests | The Guardian AMP.THEGUARDIAN.COM Former fields were naturally regenerated with oak trees growing from acorns buried by the birds 1 Quote Link to post
JakeFury 225
Don't worry Pal, it's in the Guardian which means it's ceridied b+llshit I've already killed enough of them rough shooting on syndicate shoots in the 80s and 90s to make up for it 1 Quote Link to post
Dervburner 2,549
Opinion is often divided regarding shooting jays. I’ve shot a fair few myself over the years. When I was checking trap lines yesterday, a jay seemed to be following me around. I didn’t have a gun on me, but I’d got no interest in shooting it anyway. The amount of songbird nests that don’t make it to the fledgling stage narks me off though. I know it’s not all down to jays, but they play their part in it. 1 Quote Link to post

philpot 4,967
Very rarely see them around here but Magpies are a menace deserving every pellet, bullet or cartridge load possible, nice looking but eveil little gits. Phil 2 Quote Link to post
JakeFury 225
It is fair to say, I don't see as many, and if they themselves are dwindling, no one would shoot them out responsibly, but there is a gamekeepers wisdom at work here that the f.... Government should not be involved in. They / we / normal original folk are sensible enough without Chris Packham... Swarms of detritus that eat the eggs of anyrhing that is at risk, rare or worth money is shot. To keep numbers down, easy... Simple... And if you can have a nice day, shoot well and have a pint after with yer pals, feed the ferrits and practise a craft of marksmanship at the same time.... It doesn't mean you are a psychopath, it just means you are engaged in a management of our environment that has taken place with the custom and wisdom of centuries... Not that you'd know cos things are so obviously better nowadays.... We are so much more free, more able more valued..... No.... We aren't. When Blair banned hunting with dogs I wondered if anyone would ever deprive an American Indian of a thousand year old tribal hunting ritual. And yet it was scrubbed from out consciousness like it never mattered to anyone. Quote Link to post
