I reckon he could teach most pure whippets a thing or two. First x whippet Russell. Probably not as fast as a straight whippet but hardy, clever and brave. I wish I could have him back at that age aga

Russell X 3/4 grey 1/4 collie. This lad done way, way more than I ever expected. 22" ? Cheers, D.

its a funny subject isn't it ....this hole thing of a dog opening up....yapping... as lurcher lads we are so programed to hate and detest opening up....its to point where most lads would never ad

I wouldn't know, as I'm not a 'terrier/digging person', but would the more modern lines of patterdale be more mute than the original lines, due to more bull terrier blood being added?

I'd say so, Mc is right in a way. The old timers didn't have the luxury of locators so likely  preferred steadier types that bayed and mixed.

The facts are locators are a massive aide in the digging world and save a lot of time.

I got to say this for you MC Hull, you certainly know how to make a thread go on a lot of pages!

As for whippet terrier xs, they will suit some and not others same as all crosses. What's true for one man isn't necessarily for another, what else is there to say?

I can't see the need to be arguing in circles myself but I suppose it's livened the site up a bit?

That's it, unless we have ran all these crosses we can only guess.

And just because you have a handy individual that doesn't mean the cross is the best thing since sliced bread either.

Anyone who’s been on here long enough will remember THAT particular video shot out of the police helicopter of one particular x member who shall remain nameless ? I know charts abs Tommo will remember. That was some thread ?

A few people were being pulled around the country at that time. Due to helicopter evidence taken from about a mile and half away ;)

Still.... that video was fuucking atrocious ???

A lot of old timers would only breed off a dog that would kill its fox. That doesn’t mean they was complete head bangers. They had a brain to wait for there chance to take hold ? they wanted a smart dog that could be used multiple times a week. That’s if we are talking about patterdales still and not Russell’s that was bred for there yap? There is far more knowledgeable chaps on here then me on here.

I cant argue with that, mine is the only whippet Russell I've seen in the flesh and, although he's done me proud, there could be loads of others ive never seen who are no good at all

There were a fair few whippet/russells and whippet/grey x russells in the early 80's.  The ones I seen were cracking small vermin dogs.  ?

? Some interesting and thought provoking comments....

I cannot think of a better sporting day than being out and about with a brace of bushing tykes, and a couple of fast lurchers.. In my mind, its the Sport of Kings, especially when you hit upon an area where the rabbits are 'on top' and not simply dropping straight to ground...? Such fabulous places are rare and at a premium these days....

Obviously, its not just rabbits that will be pushed out of cover, so, it can get really exciting❗

I was out ratting and rabbiting with this rangy critter, and I could not help thinking,.what a nice wee bush buster might come from his loins, if mated to a nice strong whippet....?

Personally, I am not a fan of keeping Lurchers and terriers (been there, done that, on several occasions?) and I would far rather that some other fecker keeps the terriers, and I'll fetch along the Lurchers...?

These days,...I am all for the quiet life...?
