It is whatever floats your boat - some men like them to sound when work, some like them mute. Personally, a terrier to sound and then go mute as your getting close is my ideal terrier. But again, everyone has their own preferences... the same as they do with lurchers.

Id say chances are most half bred terrier running dogs open up alot disappear in bryers hedgerows etc from what I seen

Wasn't the Bedlington once known as "the mute Terrier" ?

Not because it couldn't bark, but because when entered, it would go straight on the attack, not sit back and speak.

could that be why men used bedlington in lurchers alot mate 

and not patterdales

Problem is very very few bedlingtons are used for earth work these days or anything that requires any type of gameness.Wheras there are plenty of patterdales that dont make a sound.

a beddy is taller mate good coat and quiet a pat is smaller and much more vocal from what i seen how many lads have good pat x whippets compared to beddy whippets

17inches with plenty of leg and had numerous 3-4 hour digs to this dog and never heard it make a peep and have witnessed and known of plenty of others like him.Not many lads have bred patterdale/whippets but im sure if they were more common lads would realise theyd probably be better than little lurchers bred from non earthworking bedlingtons

Shave a bedlington down to the wood then stand it next to a typical patterdale and you'll get 1 of the reasons a Bedlington is used more often than a patterdale, it really isnt rocket science, then go and look up a video of a dog called rambo, a so called working bedlington "working" a fox in a block end and see how quiet it is, I can assure you if I were to let a terrier go at the end of a dig ( not something I would do ) there would be no fckn barking.
