First one i ever saw around Rotherham would have been 1975 and remember the owner saying the well known greyhound coursing man Crim Smith who then had the well known dog lads boozer the Crossfield Tavern at High Green nr Sheffield breeding a litter of f1x though i don't know what kennel club prefix the saluki was from.

I've seen many dogs that are bitza's mate that have supposedly had saluki in the mix but I've never seen proper coursing bred dogs or real saluki types in action.

Like I said, my 3/4 collie cross was one of the better dogs I've seen on hares so it will be interesting to see how much better the real deal is.

Mc said it was a real eye opener when he saw a proper out and out hare dog.

Did you just look at the pictures in them books you were on about.

The salukis and crosses are mostly bred off any saluki folk could get a hold of, that's why it's mostly the same blood and the sals are inbred lol

Hahahaha no mate I've read the two books I have but they are just random interviews of dog lads, half of them I've never heard of.

I honestly think the land you are running on plays a large part in seeing the full potential of some of these well known hare killing lines i remember years ago seeing a bitch that was a regular hare killer and to my knowledge was matched against the Mellishes bitch Tiny that's on some old videos run and work its hare before killing it on the Crowland nr Peterborough it was great to watch on firmer ground at Tickhill some months later the hare straight lined her to cover.

I never ran any of this famous hare land tbh, it was just out on a local mooch or on permission we had further afield.

You can find good and bad hares in the same area and fields mate.

Hell I bet there's lots of different permutations that make the differences of a good or bad hare.

Like for instance the time of the day you have the run, I mean will a hare that's just had a stomachs full run as good as a hare on an empty stomach, I doubt it.

I do agree though that like any animal, if an area is hit hard and only the best survive then that area will produce better hares.

That pure Shadey was put to Gary dickensons dog called Red which was one of the millennium 6 in the forley cup, that litter produced Max and swallow both very good dogs

I was reading an older thread and one bloke was having a pop at the Forley Cup and some of the dogs that won it, he was claiming that the hares there were poor where they held it and the competition was full of slips in the plough.

Did he have a point or was he talking wet?

I know someone who was there at the 2000 one and said the hares were poor that year for some reason, that’s probably why 6 dogs had to run it out the next day as them 6 dogs all caught 4/4 on the first day

Was the cup run at the same spot throughout it's history, if not that's a strange one isn't it as you'd think hares that get hammered would be of better quality.

Maybe there was something going around at that point in time or did any lads introduce hares ready for the season?

I know lads have done the same with rabbits and deer in certain places.

Not sure if it was always run at the same place, the hares weren’t brought in from anywhere else, it may of been something to do with sprays used on the crops that year as it was said there was an oily film on some of the water in the dykes

As it in may have poisoned the hares or something?

His other argument is that folk with the best dogs in the country wouldn't entertain the cup.

Like I've said I don't know the in's and out's of it all, I'm sure politics got involved with these sort of events and you can't keep everyone happy.

I had a dog sired by Red.. that was probably the best hare dog I’ve had, and he was a very fast type too.
