Your on Same wave length as mc they start running with the pack at 12 months an become good hunters at 18 months. An when as 2 years been 14 months an 18 months. Why do you keep saying 2 years 18 months isn't 2 years Grebs. I said a don't like to be doing owt till the pups round about 14 18 months. Read back on the post you've got time on your hands lol

All pups mature at different rates some crosses quicker than others  .and everyone enters at what they think is best .me personally I like to get them out early learning .scents dangers and socialise with other dogs I have never seen a mutt learn anything in a run .I get them round ferreting round 6 months to get fur in there mouth and learning manners just one part of the lesson for a youngster

I guess it's all down to man and dog as to when it's started.

A dog man who spends a lot of one to one time with a pup will have a good idea when it's ready.

Ive an eight month pup here who looks like it could pull a bull down, but it's still a daft pup !

When it does that mad, full speed, pretend coursing around a field, you can think " it'll kill a hare , no problem" , but a puppy playing around in an empty field is massively different to being towed around on a grueller !

Mistakes can happen when an unexpected one jumps up, but try and let them be pups, don't ruin them by being impatient. They can do the job for you for years, if treated right ?

Cheers.

Wise words, charts, which are lost on the likes of Magoo and a few others on here.  ?

Another factor that nobody has mentioned is the dogs DOB, some will have to inevitably start late depending on what month they are born, I always seemed to drop on winter litters which makes them at an age for steady entering at the back end of the next winter.

Magoo, I do indeed think you are a bit of a clown.  Hitherto,  I thought you were ok ish, but just sometimes on the wind up.

All animals and all quarry are different and there are few to no rules when starting or bringing on pups. I’ve two here now, one who is a slow starter and is still not really very mature at 18 months and you can see in its hunting and how it carries itself and runs. The other is about 9 months, and is a totally different animal, which self entered at 7.5 months and is a born predator.

In an ideal world I’d say it would be best to have a pup turning 14-15 months at the start of the season then be able to run them all the way through, so a pup born July time ideal
