Hares always fly when they get on them tracks or maybe is it that the dogs slow up a bit because there stoppers are getting hammered and they don’t like running flat out on them hard tracks

Comes down to the weight of the dog again doesn't it, their feet take a good hammering on hard tracks like that compared to the much lighter hare.

Which dog did you run, bang a pic up of it.

Tonight it sounds like the beginning of the end for these saluki types. ?

Was the saluki type off well known names or just down off show type?

Fella quoted some names but means feck all to me.  Fawngrey smooth coated dog, wants another run out when it's fitter so we'll see.

MP also said that's where lads are going wrong, they are putting coursing types back to pure saluki and they just aren't fast enough.

I remember going out with numerous pup's sired by Irish Bob's Rambo put to a pure Saluki owned by a well known character from Edlington at the time and seeing them run around the Scunthorpe Goole area they were like slugs tbh and not one of them took my fancy maybe on the big open fenland they might have come into their own but on certain land they did not came up to what was expected of them.

Just shows that nothing is straight forward when breeding dogs and best to best doesn't always work.

It's the same with gamedogs, certain dogs click and others don't, lesser dogs can and do produce better than world beaters, I suppose it's the same with running dogs.

Just because you breed the best hare catcher with the best hare catcher that doesn't mean they will produce better pups than mating with something that clicks.

Good post . I think your giving yourself a head start with generations of producers behind a litter,  even if there's no guarantees

That's it, freaks very rarely produce dogs as good as them but if they've got the breeding behind them then you're getting the best start possible.

I think some thing with them early merlin and eve dog's some thing just clicked by adding saluki to other crossbred lurchers one i remember seeing running on the Crowland 30 years ago you would have called the lad i liar if he said it had Saluki in it as it was more like a beddy x until it got behind an hare i saw it kill in front of me that's when the saluki could be seen.

That's it mate, folk had been using pures before but it was these dogs that clicked and created the top hare catchers of the day.

Maybe these other breeds brought more to the table than we think?
