That is the best way to keep the nails short...

I believe that a hell of a lot of toe injuries are caused, by overly long nails...

Nowadays I use a Dremmel Grinder,.. I find it is a vast improvement on the Clippers..

Better smoother job with a grinder may sake a bit longer but least you don’t chop to the quick an make the nail bleed or leave sharp edges my dogs don’t mind either clippers or grinder
