I was a member of the Household division back in the early 80’s . I can confirm that it still draws its officers from the nobility. If you haven’t been to Eton or a similar school you won’t get in . B

Another regiment that was very busy during the Falklands were the Gurkhas . Those guys spread terror through the Argentine ranks . I don’t think it’s right to talk on an open forum about the tactics t

The Scott’s guards fixed bayonets and charged Mt Tumbledown in the Faulklands conflict in 1982 , they had the pipes playing as they took on the Argentine marines that were dug in . It must have put th

That piper I referred to earlier was called Bill Millin.

He asked a captured German soldier why did they did not target him and apparently the reply was "we thought you had lost your mind"

He was 21 year old at the time.

Respect.

He was widely considered a buffoon in later studies

This is 2nd hand but ...a friend who was in the RM's at the time cited it as the typical stupidly of an army officer.

The Marines being clevererer than the army, a RM officer would never have compromised himself in that situation. He was always critical of the army and the Parachute Regiment in particular.

Haven't seen him for years.

I do sometimes wonder if the passage of time may have altered his opinion and recognise it as an act of true bravery.

Did any of his men die as a result of his actions or the objective was not achieved?

I don't know.

Until you have been in a combat situation you can’t really say . The fog of battle the rush of adrenaline, the wrong decision.
I say that whatever the real truth of the matter is , leave it be . The man was a hero , he got the VC . His family is proud of his actions. I can tell you one thing , there was a lot of bad feeling during and after the falklands . The fact that the Welsh guards got selected after just completing household duties at Windsor the Tower and Buck house ..... they weren’t ready for combat . But there were forces at work at the top end of command that wanted the Household division there , Scots guards, welsh , blues and royals . There is a lot of inter regimental rivalry and for some other regiment to call col H a buffoon, it smacks of sour grapes to me .
