It doesn’t happen now mate but back then it was a follow on from nobility when officers were always from nobility and carried swords instead of lances and Pikes .... it was a them and us type thing and I’m braver and more chivalrous using a smaller weapon .... except for the fact the fukcers were way back from the main action ??? .......

Thanks, Socksratese :)  I'd pondered the 'Lead from the front. Look at me, lads; I need to walk up and shoot them in the face.' sort of aspect.

As you say though; No good when the fukker's standing there in a trench, shouting, " Right, lads: Over You go! ".

But don’t be fooled into thinking that they are soft chinless wonders . They went through “brigade squad” which was about 8 weeks of hell , designed to weed out the unsuitable candidates before they did their officer training proper . The officers that I knew were “badass” , posh but “badass” , they were leaders , they didn’t think or behave like the ranks , they were a very different breed . But I can tell you that they had our respect and we would have followed them through anything. I think it’s part of what makes the British army the best in the world.

Something I remember now that I think about it, one of the country's in the " nortic nations" are very focused on island hopping and amphibious landings. Anyhow apparently the lead of the team carries a double head axe and is supposed to carry it on landings while leading their men.  Lots a viking stuff in their military.

During WWI 17% of officers were killed compared with 12% of enlisted ranks. There's probably some disparity when you climb the officer ranks though, junior officers taking the biggest risks but equally being most expendable.

I have genuinely never heard that before !

Sounds a bit jackanory to me mate.

Id say Nordic nations security forces of any kind are more likely to be carrying a dildo and a rainbow flag than an axe.

All I'm saying is if I was watching over a beach and a landing craft beachs and some big viking lookin mf came running out in body amor and a a double headed axe.....I'd probably start rethinking life choices . I need to find the article again. The video was in Norwegian or something so no clue what it was saying.
