Look on the bright side, 'Manche. It probably wasn't made in fukking China!

Remember those far back days?

"Not made in China."   That set me thinking.  At one time even my home town had a small part to play in the trap making industry .20210718_101842.jpg.2ec2f6949fe41bf7dda8b9ffd48880d7.jpg

I remember the  squirrel multi catch cages didn't  really live up to their name and that Fuller made a neat little box housing a built-in spring trap  for squirrels that's often referenced in trapping books.

Fuller is a common local name and a garden machinery outlet and repair workshop still operates as a family business under it. They even dabbled in making remote controlled  cars at one point  .

With this multi- facetted approach to business l  did wonder if there was a family  connection with  the engineering works although l think the latter may have eventually moved premises to possibly Lancing or Worthing .

I did once casually mention the possible link to a lad serving in the mower shop but he couldn't  help.   So l guess the chances  of getting my hands on forgotten prototypes,  plans or even a bit of company history are slim.20210718_104946.jpg.27504bf4e9409f4e180ea9e3b3c4e643.jpg

This is from an 1990 Arther Carter catalogue     . Fuller traps were not cheap!

" Fuller Garden Trap ". I have both models here. He made two, slightly different ones. Then, there's the single specimen with the cut away side. He made that one to demonstrate how it worked.

Catalogue.

Yes, I used a Fuller Garden Trap for Grey Squirrels,...I quite liked it..?

At one time, my business partner and me, tried to get this sturdy trap made locally.

My partner (and good old pal, the late Robin Tarrant.. R.I.P) had been in the metal business for several years, so he had all the necessary contacts withing that trade,..but, try as we may, we simply could not get that trap made in a commercially viable way. Financially, it was simply not on...?

This prompted me to bring in , modify and improve the Kania Trap.

My aim as a Rural Pester has always been to strive for a more humane performance in lethal spring traps.?

Sometimes ya win,..but not always...?

Yeah, that Fuller job would have been a handy sort of tool,..but you would need to take out a Mortgage today, to manufacture a few thousand pieces...?

All the best Brothers, stay safe ,and good trapping..?

Thanks for the peek at the catalogue. I recognise several of those trap designs as the sort that  turn-up in local sheds and gardens .Now l know why.

Fir some reason I didn't  associate Fuller's Engineering with Rudgwick (The address is now listed as a dog parlour )  . I had it planted on the industrial estate in Horsham . It could've  moved. Or l could be wrong .

A quick pick through a couple of books indicates that in1986 it was operating from Worthing , and still in the trap makng business.

:icon_eek: '86?! Wow! Late as that, eh? My Trap Collecting Mentor knew Fuller well. Reckons he was mad for penny pinching and utilising what ever he could get his hands on, for nothing. He Loved 'Economy' ?

Can't fault the guys gear though. I have his Cat Trap here. It's like a Soviet built fridge! Have the Fenn model too. Two traps I'd simply never part with, for love or money. Fenn one's never been used. Fuller has notches on the bar 8)

Lads, how did the Fuller Garden Trap work? How was it set, and how was it triggered? It says guillotine mechanism. Was it similar to a Kania? It reminds me of a modern type of Norwegian mink trap, which looks very like The Garden Trap, and has a type of guillotine mechanism.

Eddie; Believe it or not, mate? Having never examined the cut away model, I actually have no earthly idea how they function! ?

You set them by pushing down a paddle like lever at the back. Then, waggling a bit of hose pipe in the hole at the front causes a chilling, dull Clunk!!!

Forgive me; I've had a Very hard day. (Productive though! Pleased as punch with myself!) Next day or two, if ye interested, I could try setting up my camera and a torch. Try to actually capture what Does happen in there.

One other thing; Someone I once found who had used them said he Didn't like them. Seemed to prefer types of traps that threw their switch without a twitch. And these didn't measure up.

I wonder it they focus blunt force trauma to the skull? Squirrel has a hell of a skull! Neck would be much better targetted.

Well if you can find the time mate, no worries if you can't. I like the concept of it. Maybe it does have its faults, but the idea of a lethal trap built into its housing, with a simple push of a leaver to set it, means even butter fingers are safe to use it?

I Am That Soldier!!! :D

Had one of the fukkers out, today. Shot some footage. (I did my best, lads, FFS! I only have two hands)

Christ! This is one Scary fukking trap! As the evidence will show: I have Absolutely No Idea what triggers the fukking thing. Believe me; The instinctive compulsion to get ye Fingers in there and feel about a bit? Till it fires!!! :icon_eek:

Now, I'm about to feed my dogs. And the video shit is taking me all night. But, here the first clip:

Oh. Okay. Here's the firing sequence. Like I say, I have No Idea what has to happen in there. I do now remember / realise that the 'Plate' directly inside the hole is simply for putting the bait on. Peanuts were recommended.

What the squirrel had to do next? God only knows. I tried waggling that hose pipe up, down, left and right. In and out. Just suddenly fires. I didn't feel Any connection. Did have to change my strides though! :icon_eek:
