Are you sure they were not gaming pieces. I found pictures of round lead discs that are said to be Roman gaming pieces.

By the way mate I'm down in South Devon about five miles from Torbay.

Four grams is exactly twenty carats. The ancients weighed things in carats, (the carob seed was of a very uniform weight so was used for weighing, the name morphing into "carat", as used for weig

I've found 4 silver hammered coins. All Elizabeth 1st. I've found plenty of lead discs. Some are weights for the bottom of women's dresses, some for spinning thread I think. I presumed the perfect circles were weights but yeah they could be gaming pieces. The heart shaped on could of been

The neck has been broken off this bottle but it's a really good picture on it and a local name. Is it possible to cut a glass bottle? Cut the front off it and polish it up....I'm thinking I could cement it into a wall as a feature.

An old lamp I found in an old abandoned farm house, its only a cheap Chinese made one but it actually lit first time with some paraffin in it. Is it possible to buy new wicks? I'm going to polish it up and paint it

Good luck with getting a new wick in those ones, mate. Absolute fukkers!

Any trouble finding a wick? Let me know. Last I knew, they were available local to me.

I've actually got a glass, out of a hurricane lamp, too. In my work room. Sat on the shelf. One day, it may be make someone's day.

How long does a wick last?

Properly used wick will outlast the shitty tin thing it's supposed to live in, mate. They come about five to six inches long, as I recall.

But, as I say; These cheap, chinky shit things? What ever mechanism is supposed to grip, raise and lower the new wick? Bloody good luck in getting the fukker to Accept a wick.

Think of a screw with a stripped head or thread.

Cut it with a dremel and dribble water on it while your cutting it to keep the glass dust down...

Piece of piss with long nose pliers and a bit of wax. ;) I used to have 3 of them for camping with the kids and ex. Just dont let the paraffin dry out and you won't have to replace them often.

@DIDO.1 A proper wick should last a good few 100 hours (say 250-300) but it depends on the overall length (plus how much you pull through each time) and if you keep the 'fin topped up ;)

Had a mooch out with Andy123 off here. Didn't find much but definitely worth digging there in future. I'm going to go see the farmer first and get permission to put a proper hole in.
