In a big chunk of coal it was a seam running right through the chunk

Bloody hell! Didn't realise that's where it was found. Was it coal you had bought?

Contact the finds liason officer in your area and send em a pic

Heres the reply from the Finds people.

What a beautiful little object! I would really like to see it in person when it is possible to do so, it has such a lovely profile, I do think you’re right and it’s a gaming piece. We usually record them as Roman to Post Medieval though, as it’s hard to date them typologically. Here are a couple of possible parallels: https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/463177 and https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/450774

You want to keep digging as sid says. Have you got a metal detector. Happy to lend you mine if your in the North. Or just find a local metal detecting group online and ask someone to take a look. Be good if whoever lost a gaming piece also lost a coin or two.....that would then help date it!

I do have a metal detector but not a really good one, I have tried in the garden found a few coins farthings etc and loads of bit of lead from when the house was built. Used to do quite a bit of field walking when I had the jack Russell got some nice flints. Used to dig the bottles too but sold all but a few Mrs moaning at the dust collectors Lol. Thinking since I've contacted the Finds people I might donate these thing to a Museum or some thing.

Could you recommend a reasonable good Metal detector not top of the range one but you know one that could search a fare depth.
