As above. Permission to shoot often depends on who you know, getting involved with beating is a good way of getting to know the right people. Not a lot of beating going on at this time of year though, so in the mean time you need to keep asking about. Do you know anyone who already does vermin control, maybe you could start by helping out?

Thanks Dervburner, yes I appreciate there isn’t any beating going at the moment. But I do have some local shoots close by so I will get in touch and see if there is any I can do to help and maybe get the chance to go beating during the season.

Thanks

Id say that the majority of people on this site are  not shooters at all and are dog men. The ones who do go pigeon shooting don't generally go out looking to offer shooting for others.  There have been several threads on here about blokes who have taken others out and found that this guest has been a bit naughty by just going out on the land whenever they feel like it and taking others along uninvited,  going and leaving waste, cartridge cases and other junk and even going behind the back to the farmer / owner and trying to buy the shooting rights out from the bloke who invited the newbie. All of the above is counter productive. Personally I  love pigeon shooting but there isn't  much interest shown on that forum.

You just need to get knocking. Do some scouting and find the birds and then ask. It is not fun but you will get lucky in the end. I don't get this helping out at shoots lark as no one wants to bring others into there perms. Had a bunch of duck shooters turn up this season and they got right pissy because we were there before them.  I don't mind sharing perms and no issues setting up so we can all have a crack but I woudn't bring people in

Depending where in Suffolk you live, there are some very big game shoots near Darsham area next to Highlodge Shooting ground where you might find a place helping out on the shoot when things get back to normal-ish. I don't live in Suffolk as you can see but visit Highlodge a few times each year and will be down there in May for a couple of weeks although I guess that is stil doubtful at the moment.

Hi Terryd

I appreciate your feedback, I will continue to try and fingers crossed something will come up.

As regards to helping out at shoots I understand what you are saying completely. This said I would like to get involved with some beating anyway.

All the best.

For someone who doesn’t have any pigeon shooting permission it’s better than nothing. Most shoots near me allow interested beaters roost shooting at this time of year and then a bit on spring drilling’s and maize drilling’s in May / June . And then , as long as it isn’t too close to the birds , post harvest and even some shooting on flattened wheat or barley. It is a way of thanking them for their help and also vital pest control. It is the Game keepers who says who can go ( or should be ) not someone who sees it as “their patch” . Also it is a way of getting yourself recommended and recognised as a good and responsible shooter . It has a tendency to snowball. I’ve been asked to shoot pigeons, but because I’m usually too busy with birds in release pens I have passed on the names of “good lads” . It’s a foot in the door as they say .
