Good god! I do believe we have a winner!!! :icon_eek: That Absolutely ties in with what I remember. Floating in water. Round. Black. Harder than any egg. But smashable by stamping on them. As a rotten conker would be!

And, the stuff inside? It makes sense that the water logged and decomposed flesh would indeed break down to some whitish shit.

Fukking Reesult!!! :D Well over fifty years I've thought about that day and wondered WTF they'd been!

Well done, Greyman! :D

But does that tie in with the correct time of year. ???

Because the explanation and other eliminations made it make sense. And because I'm open to new ideas about what I don't know.

But, hey; Thanks for your own, as ever, reasoned and valued input :)

You're welcome mate, to be honest I thought  the  large pop up boilies had won it.

:D Fukk me, mate! It was pushing sixty fukking years ago! You expect me to remember what bloody week it was?!

Ican only say it wasn't thick with snow ~ and we had real snows, back in those days. And that I well remember handling conckers in bright weather. I recall it wasn't wretched weather. So, yeah ...

Excellent! Had a google: " Boilies " would, by their content and structure, eventually disintegrate in water.

Conkers, however " Float in water, when they're rotten inside. "! If I ever hear from my sister again, I must ask her if she remembers that incident. One less thing to come back and drive us to distraction on our death beds! ?

I remember the things your talking about we found them as kids in a local pond.

I remember them being quite rubbery, not saying the answer isn't conkers but I don't recall any trees nearby.

We always assumed they had come from the lily pads or Reed beds, seed pods, root bulbs, feck knows something like that lol just a thought.

The location was a local, city council managed pond. Pretty bare place, now I think about it. Loads of ducks though. And people fished there. Other than that, just an expanse of water with a couple of small islands for the ducks.

Black, hard spheres.

Well, as all we could really see was water and ducks?

Sounds like a similar thing. But, different, Jack. See how I'd categorically stated it was just plain water, at my place? No reeds. No lilly pads. Typical council run amenity. Like a concrete bowl of water. With half a dozen black balls in it, to wind kids up for the rest of their lives :D
