The "British Isles " is a group of islands, it's not British, but contains Great Britain. The Republic of Ireland government doesn't refer to "The British Isles " in any official documents, it simply calls them "These Isles", but the term "British Isles " is recognised by the UN and most other international bodies as an area, not a political entity, it's also used in shipping and aviation.
