His knee healed up, but he took such a kicking that it was bound to have had an effect. Funny, I’m chatting about Ronaldo and sat watching Dundalk v Athlone Town.....it’s 6-0 at half time to Dundalk ! Athlone are managed by the local FAI bloke, it’s f***ing terrible.....I have genuinely seen better Sunday football ! That's my families town, Dundalk, mate....last time I was there I was carrying my grandads coffin... Blackrock to be precise, about 3 miles outside....Dundalk was a rough old place when I was a young English lad out in the pubs ..some good times..
Welsh_red 4,755
I kind of remember ronaldo crying at his retiremrnt press conference . Or i remember at least reading about it. I remember the quote "my mind is still sharp , it can make spilt decisions but my body doesnt follow them" Also read he was "fat" because of medication or illness of some kind , and the cure to it was a medication that was prohibited in football

Our old Sunday league when I played had something like 10 divisions of 15-18 teams !! It was the biggest Sunday league in the country at one point I think! Obviously a mixture but there were some really decent teams and players amongst that lot, it was great

Like you said, watching him evade leg crunching tackles and out muscle much bigger players was a sight to behold. He was as strong as an ox and yet was so fluid and balanced, above all that he had immense passion and charisma. You have to remember, he was that amazing despite abusing his body and health for most of his career! If i didnt know better id swear some old boy in his 80's was sitting describing Georgie Best......i must have heard that type of description about him a million times even to this day.

All I was saying is that I don’t think so and giving reasons why But, talking of Ronaldo, if we are making comparisons Maradonas honours would fit in a match box but you’d need an articulated truck for Ronaldo I always think such debates are difficult to judge....to me Georgie Best looks like the greatest footballer who ever lived ( from a highlight reel ) but i dont know what he was like or how he effected a game during a long period with his sides back to the wall as i never saw him play a full game.....its so easy to say yeah Maradona was the best,Pele was the best....some people swear by Cruyff or Eusebio etc but if you havent seen them either play live or at least play plenty of full games how can you judge.....i always say Ronaldo is the best player ive ever seen play live and thats because i remember seeing the impact he had on shit, boring nothing games where things didnt go his way you cant read about players or watch clips and decide who is best based on that in my opinion.

That’s true mate, and it’s also a positional thing too. Its like the Christiano Ronaldo and Messi debate, different players, different positions and different styles.....you cant make that judgement imho All you can do is have a look at a player at the end of his career, do the maths and think about his overall impacts on his team or teams and the game in general. Paulo Maldini got mentioned, played all his career for his club, won everything, won his last champions league medal at 40 ! and is also a player you would show young defenders if you were trying to teach them how to go to work and look after themselves.......that’s a great player imho Edited November 30, 2020 by WILF
