Squirrel Feeders

Recommended Posts

Due to the vast amount of acorns all over the woodland floor at the moment, I’m wondering if it’s worth setting up any feeders yet. I went out with the intention of setting up, but with all this natural food around, plus the fact that I’d forgotten to take any bloody peanuts with me I’ve held off for now. Wasn’t a complete waste of time as I got a squirrel and a woody, but I’d be interested to know if anyone one here is running feeders with much success at the moment. Is the lure of peanuts pulling the squirrels in yet?

So much natural food about at the moment on my permission, they aren’t even comeing in the feeders with peanuts in them

Yerr, that’s the thing here. In this wood it’s like a carpet of acorns. I’ve put it off before now for that reason, but I thought I’ll give a go, see what happens.

Ever thought or tried smearing a nice helping of peanut butter in to the trays aswell??, Might intice them in to start regularly coming to the feeder mate?

We filled the feeders up last week, first time since last winter and repositioned two of them by some distance as we built new hides, the feeders were hammered straight away. I set the trail cameras up as well covering the squirrel feeders and pheasant feeders, I do know we have deer trying to reach the peanuts but they cannot reach, in case you are wondering, each feeder has a ladder strapped to the tree so we can fill easily once a week.

Our feeders are made of 5' x 4'' dia steel galvanised painted tube which takes about one 10lt size container of mixed peanut wheat, and maze which just about lasts a week although is they are really feeding, we refill about every 5 days. My buddy has just finished a new feeder for another farm so better look for another ladder.

Well I put a camera on this feeder yesterday as the peanuts are going down now. Despite a carpet of acorns on the woodland floor it looks like they’re on ‘em. I’ll top it up on Monday and see how we go next week. Might have a bash at them in about a week.

We have just had three trail cameras out on one of our perms which is a quarry comprising of a wooded area and meadow area. I have copied some of the camera shots both day and night because it is quite interesting who comes to visit at night time although as we had over 3000 photos, I couldn't be arsed to search through them all to show the foxes, rats, buzzard, crows etc etc but here we go. You will notice how high the feeders are off the floor but you will see why as well, its funny how the squirrels have taken to using the ladders to reach the feeder platforms, made me giggle anyway.

Just mixed up a bin of peanut, maize, sunflower seed and smaller quantity of wheat ready for the winter, my pal has the same volume as well so we both can go and fill the feeders when needed.
