Greyhound x's??

Recommended Posts

I asked a friend a question today as i've yet to breed a home grown lurcher. Does it matter, for lets say a first cross collie grey, if the greyhound is the dam or the sire of the litter? He couldnt be sure so maybe someone could let me know

You put speed over stamina so sire would be the greyhound dam the collie and if you do 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie its the same

hancock probably the most succesful lurcher breeder in the country always puts a collie dog over a greyhound bitch.if you look up hancocks lurchers on the net theres loads of pics on his site..he uses a border/bearded collie sire.....

The reason Hancock does this is because he gets given clapped out old greyhound bitches free of charge and has a few what many consider second rate studs he owns. Greyhound bitches have big litters with few complications, if there are any then there's a list of old bitches waiting to replace them.

It's purely economics i am sorry to say and bugger all to do with breeding decent lurchers.

depends what you are looking for???? if you want a first cross grey/collie go to him...the trouble is who knows the true breeding of a pup...most lurchers change hands many times in there lives.and the pedagree can change with them...if he is so bad at breeding dogs how is he still in business???..i know a few people with his dogs and they are fine..iv had dogs that i havnt got any idea what they were bread with and they were exellent dogs.iv got a dog now that is ....grey/suluki/deerhound...but is it.the lad i had him off says so but who knows... what is a good lurcher??? i wouldnt have a lurcher that marks holes..i want pure lamping dogs not one that tells me were the rabbit he has just missed has gone.if the dog misses i want it back at my side waiting for the next rabbit to lamp...

It makes no diferance whatsoever if the dam is the collie or the greyhound.

So to get a3/4 bred you are saying that the greyhound must be the sire and the halfcross must be the dam?

I defenatly think you are well off the mark there bud.

thanks for the feedback. i'm looking to breed a first cross litter this year, have a couple in mind. If i was to breed a bull cross and had the dam greyhound, is the litter inclined to be more leggy than if the bull was the dam. i've seen some nice leggy bull x's and some stumpy yolks aswell. i'm just using these crosses as examples

It makes no difference at all. It's old wives tails that you should have the collie as the sire and the bitch the greyhound. It's the same sperm and eggs mixture! People used to say that if a purebred bitch was ever mated by a mongrel then the bitch was knackered and would produce mongrel pups in all her future litters. It's nonsense. As somebody said, Hancock has a continual supply of discarded track bitches and therefore only needs a few collie sires. Incidentally, Hancock only breeds from the same bitch twice and then puts the bitch to sleep. He says after the first two litters the bitches produce fewer pups. He argues he is at least prolonging the bitches' lives for a coup[le of years because they were due to be put down before he acquired them.

Well he's an ex battery chicken farmer so he won't be the most sentimental of men :)

My bitch is line bred from lurchers where the sire has been the greyhound and the dam the collie.

She is more than 50% collie and her line are all quite racey.

Nice racy dogs mate. I have a collie grey bitch from Hancock which is at least as racy as your two if not slightly more so. Unfortunately being an old git I cannot master the technology to put a picture up so you'll just have to believe me!
