Grandsons first trip with his 28g

Recommended Posts

Several weeks ago i bought my 10 yr old grandson a 28g semi auto to learn to shoot with. I took him to a mates clay shoot (spit) three times to give him the basics. He had fifty shots with 14 gram carts the first time, one hundred shots with a mixture of 14/18 gram carts and the seventy five with 21 gram carts. Well last Saturday afternoon i took him to see if he could get a shot or two at pigeon coming into a small wood then maybe a shot at mallard at one of the pits. My mate had loaded some 24 gram steel loads up for his 28g and so gave me some for him to try on the ducks.

His first shot was at a pigeon come in to roost and he connected with it nicely. My dog retrieved it for him and he was made up. As it neared dark we went to one of the four pits on this farm to wait for any duck that might come. We waited about fifteen minutes and six mallard turned up together. I told him to take the safety off and pick one out. He did as i told him and a nice drake crumpled to his shot. As he shot a water hen took flight from the reeds at the side of us and he downed that with his second shot at it. It is a cracking little gun and calibre for him to use. He wants to come foxing with me now.?

Cracking that ?, his first outing at real stuff and he’s already a better shot than me and I’ve been doing this for years, the futures bright for this chap ?

Maybe you should paint some of them blue lines across your eyes!

Great stuff I bet he’s over the moon

and a duck on his first outing?

my lads loving going out clay smashing, the clays cost nowt and I throw them for him but the price of 410 cartridges?

maybe him being on the PlayStation all the time is not a bad thing?

That’s a great start to a lifetime of shooting , my grandad sowed the seeds for my lifetime interest in field sports by taking me ferreting and teaching me how to make nets . I will never forget those frosty mornings or him letting me have one of his woodbines “ don’t tell your dad “ .
