Hunting gun fired at cat

A RIPLEY man has warned pet owners to be on their guard after his cat was shot with a hunting weapon in the town two days before Christmas.

Its the second time in six months a cat belonging to the Broughton family of Almond Avenue has been targeted.

Gingy, a one year old ginger tom, was lucky to survive after emergency treatment but still has one of the deadly pellets lodged in its side.

Owner Kenny Broughton said: "We had three cats but six months ago one of them came home in extreme pain. We decided to take it to the vet in the morning but sadly it died in the night.

"Then two days before Christmas, Gingy came home showing exactly the same symptoms. This time we rushed it straight in.

"The vet found a tiny hole in its side. She x-rayed it and found two pellets.

"They were high velocity, stainless steel pellets which are very expensive and can only be fired from a special hunting weapon, they don't fire out of a normal pellet gun.

"To get two pellets inside a cat it would have to either be a repeater gun or reload exceptionally quickly. Whoever is doing this is somebody into some serious hunting.

"We got him as a orphan when he was only one week old and he was hand-reared by us because his mother was attacked by a dog. The cat is very much loved by the family."

Gingy was allowed home to spend Christmas with Kenny's sons Dylan, 11, and Ashley, eight, but must return to have stitches removed later this week.

One of the pellets has been removed but the other will be lodged in the animal for the rest of its life.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: "A lot of these incidents tend to happen during school holidays and weekends. These attacks cause a great deal of suffering. Cats are now the most targeted animal, ahead of wild birds. It's on the rise and it's very worrying."

A spokesman for Derbyshire Police said: "We received a report that between Thursday night and Friday morning, December 20 and 21, a cat had been shot with two pellets in the Almond Avenue area of Ripley.

"We'd like to appeal to any witnesses or

anybody with information to call either Derbyshire Police on 0845 123 3333 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111."

I have done  several times in fact :D

Don't you just hate biased media, the facts of this incident are all wrong and the reporter has absolutely no idea. I'm surprised it didn't make head line news on the BBC, it's about their standard of reporting

I'm not a lover of cats at all, they shyte all over our garden, I've tried all sorts, the cats end up eating them :D seriously! putting rags dipped in vinegar seems to be working. :)

Couldn't harm one tho, its all down to the owners, they just don't give a toss about where they dump, as long as its not in their garden. These owners should be made to clean the catcrap up like dog owners do, I wanna know why not.

Someone's gonna say they are feral, if they are, what the f*** are they doing living in someone's home.? :hmm:

My mate has a pigeon loft don't mention cats to him, poxy things cr@p all in your garden , kill song birds by the million , I hate the things, the only cat I like is a cat on a farm, a good rat and mouse killer!

The majority of cats I saw in our garden of our last home were sh*towses  while I shot the rats, my neighbour would catch some in his cage, one evening while we chatted over our low fence, the cage with a rat trapped inside was placed about ten feet away from us, one cat passed the cage and the rat cut its own face on the wire as it dived at the cat, the cat was looking in the opposite direction of the cage as it passed by not daring to even look at the rat.
