Fishing in miniature

Found a tiny private keep out pond  to try  so with whip in hand 1/4 pint of maggots gave it a bash , love these farm ponds out the way of clubs etc , it must be 25 yrds by 15 surround by trees  wasn’t expecting much or fishing without getting snagged  but it was a bite a go with the little fish . , a pinch of maggots every cast see the fish getting slightly bigger. Great fun for an hr until the mother of tangles

That's cracking GL, used to find hidden little waters as a kid, one place was rumoured to have a giant Zander if I remember rightly a real deep irrigation pond hidden amongst trees on a golf course, lost my dad's Abu closed face in it. Bad times lol. But it's nice to fish places off grid or at least feeling you're the first person to catch that fish....

Spot on that GL used to know for a little place very similar that had the biggest rudd I've ever seen in there

Gona go back for an hr tomoro with bit of ground bait and bigger baits see wat happens  maybe top the monster I caught today , then il move onto the sea bass creeping up the creek Oct run

That looks just like the little farm pit l've been fishing this Summer. 25yards wide,40yards long and about 7 feet deep  in places. Local wisdom has it that the pond was drained and the fish removed many years ago but it had been known as The Tench Pond. 

I started fishing it after spotting a shoal of little rudd. It was hard going , even these tiddlers were very wary. Only after a few visits ,including some biteless blanks, did it slowly unlock its secrets...

Thats funny I looked at my pin loaded with 3lb line but took the whip   Will add when I first took a look it was a few Rudd I see on the surface  of the pond which was when I decided to give it a go , so as I revisited the pond again today for an hr  again it was a bite a cast I hooked up a lobworm  for last chuck  and was caught off gaurd as the float dipped I lifted the whip and got straightened out by I guess was a tench gone step up tackle for next trip maybe the pin

Well, l had a go for couple of hours this evening, and totally blanked. Not even a bite. I hope you have better luck GL. 

Definately take the centrepin next time. The first decent tench l hooked from the pond took me by surprise too. I'd been struggling for strikable bites and nearly went down to a lighter trace and smaller hook. Luckily l was too lazy because when l did get a decent bite the fish was definately the boss for a while.

Still , as it was ,this evening the fish were  definately the winners. The dog so obviously lacked confidence in my ability he even had the nerve  to fall asleep on my landing net. No doubt  , confident he wasn't going to be disturbed. The unfaithful wotsit!

This topic bought back a few memories from the 70's. I had a mate who lived in the terrace of railway cottages adjacent to Staplehurst station in Kent. He told me about 2 very small ponds nearby, one was about 200 yards from his cottage, and the other about 600 yards. Being close to the railway they were probably bomb craters from WW2, the closer one having abundant weed, and being in the middle of an open field, contained good sized tench to about 4lbs+ along with some smaller rudd. The further pond was mainly surrounded by trees and also contained tench and rudd but to a much smaller size, stunted if you like, a half pounder being a biggie, it had very minimal weed growth as well. Neither was deeper than 3 feet. I fished them both but obviously much preferred the one with the bigger fish, and those fish fought like the clappers in the shallow water. Best bait being flake pulled from the inside of a fresh crusty loaf, and when you got the eruption of bubbles all around your float the anticipation made your heart rate switch up a gear. It was worth the long trip down there by train just for a few hours fishing.

Unfortunately the land got sold off and units built, and you would never know that those little ponds actually existed, now being just treasured memories.

There is a small river near here that I call 'Lilliput' after Arthur Ransome's story 'Fishing in Lilliput' that was obviously inspired by Gulliver's Travels.Within a one mile stretch there are some very varies swims and lots of species. I can usually count on six or seven different species in a session.

Had a return visit to the farm pond yesterday put out some mash bread and put some flake on the hook fish touch ledger on the pin  had a bite less couple of hrs , changed tack and went again today this time put a chubber float on the rod pin set up , got six nice baits on the whip in know time , lip hooked a roach and let it have a spin about the swim hoping for a decent perch as I dropped a 10 oz perch couple days ago , after 20 mins no joy on went a lip hooked gudgeon.  After a couple of mins in the rain lashing down hard it worked it’s way to a overhang bramble Bush. And away she went  fighting hard on the 3lb line pin set up I was thinking maybe a daddy Sargent of the pond was on after a decent scrap was very surprised  to see a chub surface  not that I was put out  I went for the buggie that snapped my pole set up  thinking chub maybe the culprit and leaves room fir another visit for the daddyo perch  how chub got into this tiny pond I wouldn’t have a clue miles from any river or lake that contain chub
