shovel leaner 7,650
It’s strange that this thread has appeared now , I recently got permission to shoot on a farm that once belonged to a family who’s son was a friend when I was a kid . At the back of the farm are two very old oak trees that I used to climb and play on 45 + years ago . As I walked around them I recognised the same branches that I grabbed hold of and the same way up to the top . Makes me feel really insignificant and how short our lives are . I know they aren’t the biggest or the oldest oaks out there but there is a strange sort of beauty to their twisted branches and swollen trunks . 10

The one oak is on its way out the other still has a few years left, here is a better picture of it from further back . You are right , if only they could talk . A guy in the village had a nice porch built with oak . I asked him where he got the oak from . It turns out it’s French oak !!! In fact most of the oak we now use in building is from France (spit) . What the f@ck is happening to the country, when we can’t even source decent English oak anymore?
chartpolski 24,245
We haven't been self sufficient in wood for a long time. An interesting story involves wood and jet engines; Shortly after ww2, Harold Wilson, later to be Prime Minister, did a trade deal with the Russians. Part of the deal included the Russians selling us timber to be used in the rebuilding after the war, and the U K giving the Russians, plans and prototypes of the Rolls Royce Neme jet engine . The Russians then put this engine into the Mig15, which was used to devastating effect against us in the Korean War ! The question "why didn't we get the timber from Canada" has never been satisfactorily answered. Cheers.

There can’t be that much oak used for period restorations and quality new builds . The soft wood that is harvested on the estate I work on , some goes to construction or pallets, the rest biomass. We are literally burning good timber . I think the reason for the French oak is it’s better quality .
Astanley 11,573
Good thread this ,there is n Oak nearby that is over thousands years old ,I have spent many happy hours gazing at it ,I take a leaf off it every now and again ( I use them as bookmarks ) ,personally I think the relationship with the oak and the people of these isles goes beyond iconic or much loved ,I think there is a spiritual connection ,it provides or has provided food ,fuel and shelter for millennium s ,but it satisfies a deeper need in us , it has the attributes of a parent ,it is strong ,it endures ,it is ever present ,and being close to one makes a British blooded person ,feel safe ,feel at home and feel loved . 7
