I think Lionel Messi is the greatest player of his generation in that position, absolutely 100% .......but the greatest ever ?

I was lucky enough to be a young bloke watching football  in what I consider To be a golden age of football and players.....obviously the first that springs to mind is Ronaldo (check his list of honours, it’s breathtaking !!)

Henry

Batistuta

Scholes

Beckham

Bergkamp

Zanetti

Maldini

Rivaldo

Stam

Kluivert

Gazza

Del Piero 

I could go on and on and on.....the 90s were football gold, it’s very hard to say Messi is the greatest player ever

The 98 World Cup was the greatest display of football the world has ever seen imho

Ronaldo (Portuguese) is better imo can do it all, would be best player in the world in any position he picked imo prob including keeper.

I’ve always been cursed with watching Messi as whenever I’ve watched him , he’s never had one of his career defining games . 

without a doubt a true great and a huge name in the game . Think him and Ronaldo are the two sides of the same coin , one all natural with phenomenal ability  the other hard work and dedication from A lesseR ability . 
 You can never mention one without the other . 
 

was he fortunate to be part of a team that included the likes of xavi and iniesta who were on his wavelength ?  Undoubtedly. And that should be accounted for in his legacy . 
 

As for the goat ? , for me I think it’s very hard to back that statement as players like the original ronaldo , Ronaldinho, Miroslav klose , all offer different things . 
 

did he truly truly ever shine in the international stage ? 
 

And as much as I hate this phrase we will never truly know “what he is like on a wet Wednesday night in Bolton ? “

 I think what anyone has to do is respect Christiano Ronaldo, that is shear hard work and determination.....he made himself the player he is.

Messi, well, you can’t coach that.....it’s a god given gift.

I see were your coming from but Ronaldo has natural ability in spades hard work will only take you so far, also Messi was given hgh as he was too small which is false and cheating as far as I'm concerned how many other strikers would be better if they were 4 inch taller

Henry? Absolutely consistently sensational for 3 - 4 seasons , premier league , World Cup , euros ,  fantastic player who redefined the striker role in the modern game 

Romario ? Arguably scored more goals than anyone ever if you believe him. Nasty , tough , aN in the trenches Type striker who led Barca and Brazil, man was an absolute sensation up top. 
 

totti ? A man who led his boyhood club with leadership and skill enforcing standards on and  Off the pitch . he loved being at Roma and Roma loved him being there . The sports last true man of the people  for me .

Ronaldo is one of the greatest ever to lace a pair of boots up no doubt but he falls short of them IMO. 

We are likely talking about the two best of all time. 

Ronaldo for example scored more goals than games he played for Real Madrid, amazing.

What everyone has to remember is that C Ronaldo and Messi have been allowed to play under a different system of rules specifically introduced to encourage just that.

THE Ronaldo did more and he did it having absolute chunks taken out of him week in, week out as did every player of his generation.

To illustrate what I mean I’m going to make a big statement that I’m sure plenty of people will say is bollocks but I genuinely believe it, if Raheem Sterling had been playing in 98 he wouldn’t have got in an Arsenal, Manchester United, Inter Milan or Juventus side.....he may have been on the bench but he wouldn’t make the starting 11 !!

My argument is more against Messi than CR7 as he is Portuguese. 
 

Ronaldo has two world cups and in the one where he was runner up in 1998 (which Henry won) and supposedly had a shocker , he was still top scorer and most assists . 
 

messi has nothing like that .
