'Jaw-dropping' global crash in children being born - BBC

Recommended Posts

Quote

The fertility rate - the average number of children a woman gives birth to - is falling.

If the number falls below approximately 2.1, then the size of the population starts to fall.

In 1950, women were having an average of 4.7 children in their lifetime.

Researchers at the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation showed the global fertility rate nearly halved to 2.4 in 2017 - and their study, published in the Lancet, projects it will fall below 1.7 by 2100.

On the face of it, imo that's f***ing good news! The economists though will be in tears....

In what way is that good news born ??

imho social media and tv are pushing a narrative that life is about more than your children ( which it isn’t ) and the lifestyle which you are supposed to be living in the eyes of the world isn’t conducive to the raising of more than one two children max .

children cost and the fact that life doesn’t let you live how you want in the eyes of the world Is a cause for mourning rather than celebration imho

It's not good news when you also read that population will only halve in civilised countries, India is forecast to be at a similar level as it is now. Sub Saharan Africans are forecast to go from 1 billion to 3 billion in the same timescale. The land can't support the present population so where will the other 2 billion end up?

I read it all. It's brilliant news that social progress naturally caps population growth. A race to top is really a race to the bottom. We'll destroy to place with that attitude.

India is projected to drop by 20%....

Africa has a LONG way to gain in terms of social progress, it can literally only get better. There's considerable hope there.

My biggest concern is that economists will shit themselves and force migration on us to keep growth buoyant. We need to resist that like our lives depend on it. All the questions that are asked in that article can be answered by social adaptation. But immigration will be sold to us as the only solution...

Quite simply, infinite growth is impossible in the real world. This planet is finite in size yet we as a species carry on like it doesn't have an edge. We're f***ing the place and we seem to be incapable of taking direct action to stop that.

If our growth isn't curbed in some way we will have nothing but 'civilisation' left to enjoy and one day the resources will run dry and then we will be forced to control our population. That way we do it with f**k all left to enjoy. This way it happens while there exists some wonder left.

I've always said mandatory euthanasia at a certain age should be considered.

Lower the retirement age and let us have a few years of relaxation before we take a trip to the hospital and get put to sleep.

Migration will be forced not just by economists but also by weight of numbers, we just won't be able to stop them. As for social progress, Africa has made very little progress in the last 1000 years when compared to everywhere else, migration in big numbers just dumbs down the existing population and creates ghettos and enclaves.

I mean, I don't agree that 'we just won't be able to stop them'. But at least now we know of a mechanism for preventing that event.

You don't have to explain to me the consequences of millions of Africa's finest being admitted to our islands.... what you've just laid out there happens whether social progress controls population growth or not though. The difference is we have the ability to impact that through this mechanism. Worse case it doesn't work and we're no worse off.

In the event we don't naturally control population then such authoritarian measures would be forced on us. And after those measures have had the desired effect of bringing stability we will look around us at what is left of the planet and conclude we left the inevitable too late....

This saves us that level of loss and pain.

I haven't yet decided what the cut off point will be.

It wouldn't be easy putting down a top shagger like Ray but he's already spread his genes, gotta give the youngsters a chance. ?

Thinking of ideas, maybe you need to pass a MOT of some sort.

I could imagine you and Ray in your hospital gowns trying to convince the doctors you're good for another ten years. ?

Doctor: "Right Ray, I want you to read all those letters out on the board."

Ray: "Eh, what did you say Doc?"

I read it yesterday mate and let out a resigned exhale of breath when I saw the main cause of concern was “where is the tax money going to come from?”..........I won’t expand on my thoughts about the whys and wherefores of the wider thing, I’m sure everyone is bored to death of my nonsense.

But I would urge everyone to read it and start connecting the dots backward ;)

Well, whether those people have corrupt intentions or not, if the population has a demographic shift towards the old then that will result in serious pressure on the Budget. And that will have serious implication on society if the money isn't found. Historically the solution to these problems has been terribly short sighted. When you have a finite amount of land, increasing the population to drive economic growth in a game that has no end is f***ing mental! It's on par with the attitude that the oceans cannot be over-fished or that Africa's ivory cannot be over harvested. As a species we have a history of underestimating our unparalleled ability to consume and dominate, particularly in the face of what appears endless.

We have a simple choice, continue to consume like there is no end, or find a better way before the simple equation of supply and demand force us to in a world that has little left beyond us.
