It's a contender for the US Armies new rifle round right? Basically the new 556..... which was the new 762...... which errrrr was the new 30.06...... And out of all those, which would I opt

There has been steel cased ammunition for decades. It's just that no one saw the need for any more performance than we already have in the field. The other issues is the diminishing returns

Well that killed that....                         ?

44-40 Was created for Winchester 1873 it was made to have better performance than .44rimfire wich had limited success in military use (Henry, Spencer, Win 1866 rifles) Winchester didn`t get any big military contracts for it so it was mostly sold to civilians. The US civil war was over and the US army had a lot of .50Gov and .45Gov Trapdoor Springfields.

Rifle and ammunition developement had a crazy speed att the end of the century.

.44 rimfire 1860

.50 gov 1866 centerfire

10,15*61r Jarmann 1881

8mm lebel 1886 the first smokeless

Whichever company it is with the bullpup offering in the competition (GD?), they have developed a polymer cased cartridge.

Again, with the warfighter in mind. Can’t see that taking off in the sporting sector. Ammo weight just isn’t a factor.

Both True Velocity and Textron offer polymer cartridges for NGSW. Textron have telescopic ammo and the shells eject forward.

No but price plastic+steel may be cheaper in volumes.

New DAZ washes whiter than white, dead is deader than dead.!!  They went through all this with advanced weapon system competition in which case less ammunition and plastic guns were developed. Yes it worked very well but was not really any better than 5.56. Ideas that spent fortunes and never went anywhere.  Go on YouTube and watch forgotten weapons. History is littered with hundreds of such ideas and types. EM 2 and the 280 British being an excellent example.
