jetro 5,349
I'm thinking of building a small flat behind our house here, and giving my daughter and her family ours, more room for the her, and will help them along. Was thinking of converting a 20ft/30ft container into a one bedroom/bathroom, kitchen/living aera. Have looked on You tube, can't seen to much hassle. Has anyone any experience in converting these. Atb j There’s a few of those building off grid programmes where they use that idea mate, may be worth a look. Out if interest, when you cost it, what would be the difference in doing that compared to timber frame clad in metal ? You would have more flexibility to achieve the footprint you need ?

This is just an idea at the moment, so just running through ideas. Was pricing block and plaster ect ect, Now since you gave me the idea of timber frame I'll price that as well. The thing with the container, is so far for me at least is, it's left there on site, no need for a raft, or footings for block work, walls and roof already there. All the internal work I can do my self, it wouldn't look like a new build, it's cost effected. I know that there is a lot of snags I haven't seen yet, but as said it's just an idea. It will be just a simple, cosy place for my missus and myself. Close to the grandkids but our own privacy Atb j

So decent foundation and slightly oversize roof to really keep water off the sides and away from the feet so to speak. My shed topped up at about €4K with the concrete base, I probably could have shaved €500 off that if I did the base myself. Everything else I did myself

I'm the sort of person who lives by the motto K.I.S.S keep it simple stupid LOL, Stupid been the main word there lol. My missus and myself are minimalist, we need very little, that why I was thinking of the container, it would save a lot of hassle, construction wise, and on finances as well, plus I wouldnt have to mess around with planning permission, which is a complete nightmare I'm sure before the days out there will be 101 other options put forward LOL Atb j

Atb j Mate it’s a great idea and the sky is the limit, YouTube is your friend for this sort of stuff, I,m at the start of a long process of life change and if I end up we’re i hope in the future, I would like to do one myself as a guest house for when the ever growing family come to stay

Personally I think it's ideal, for two. Nice and simple/cosy. Just need basic kitchen for cooking, won't need washing machine or dryer, just use one of thoes pay ones you see a the petrol stations, one down the road from us. Wood burner for heat. I know it sounds simple, and in my mind it is, it's people that complicate things. Atb j
