It may not be the dpf that’s making the fan run on, my s3 does it and that like a cool down cycle 

the dpf, if working correctly should do its regeneration once the soot mass reaches a certain level, it will normally do this when you are on a good run and the car is at running temperature, it does this by over fuelling and raising the dpf temperature above 600 degrees and burning the crap out of it, if there’s a fault with it the dpf light will come on ( normally a faulty sensor ) and after repair will need a forced regeneration, the fans do sometimes run on after a regen but there’s other things that do this as well

Yeah that's what I read today that it just a thing that VAG cars do for a cool down cycle? 

I thought that it's strange doing a regen when it was idling after I'd just done a hour run on the motorway. 

I was in awe of the adaptive cruise control, I'm easily amused I know. ?

Check the dash mate most don’t you now get a light that comes on just before the head goes bang or the car bursts into flames, easy to see why shinny gimmicks like wi fi are more important to modern car owners than things like mpg or reliability

The French were the first manufacturers to do away with temperature gauges and they are the worst offenders for boiling up, by the time the light came on it was to late, rovers K series engine was another one that was absolute rubbish, I lost count of how many head gaskets I did on them, they were known as the rover kettle series because of how many boiled up

Apparently the little 3 cylinder ford eco thing is another really bad one that was actually causing car fires a while back, my old land rover had a temperature gauge and an oil light, that told me everything I needed to know and it’s still on the road after 44 years of graft

The temp was guage fine tbh, it's either a regen or just it's way of cooling down?

Some cars just leave the fans going to cool the engine/turbo I think, so you don't have to keep the engine switched on after a drive to allow them to cool. You can regen the dpf by computer or just get it really hot I think, don't always work though and a new dpf is £££. All these modern diesels are bollocks just got a nice 2.0 trafic with 80k on for dogs and fishing should be good for another 300k with a bit of maintence.

Yeh I was toying with the idea of getting a petrol but for a car that size they are thirsty as f**k, plus the fact I don't fancy buying a petrol car that as done a lot of miles.

The k series engine was a fine reliable engine in its standard form , when they took them above 1.4 they got the problems with boiling up

I wouldn't buy a second hand newish diesel from what I've seen/been told it's a lottery with all this emission dpf egr crap.
