To put this in the context of dogs, racing whippets in particular, the following may give some people pause for though;

In the late 60's early 70's I was the Handicapper at a couple of whippet tracks.

The scratch dogs, the fastest dogs of the day were doing about 9 seconds dead for 150 yards.

Thats around 16 yards per second.

When I got back into the racing a few years back, I simply couldn't believe the times I was told the dogs were now doing, 8 seconds for 150 yards, with some exceptional dogs even faster.

Now, one second faster doesn't seem a lot, but it translates as 16 yards faster over 150 yards !

I simply couldn't believe that the scratch dogs of today could give the scratch dogs of 50 years ago 16 yards start, so I bought a stop watch and timed them myself, and it was true ! They were doing these times !

How have the dogs got so much faster ? They get the same training, the same feeding, run on the same tracks, out of the same traps, timed with the same equipment, so how could it happen ?

Well, the only difference I could see was "Selective Breeding"

Years ago we bred from our own bitches to the local villages or council estates best dog, but for many years now, they've been travelling the country, breeding best to best. If a dog or bitch isn't good enough, it isn't bred from !

I don't know how this relates to Owens and Bolt, but it's convinced me that dogs are getting faster !

Where will it end ? Who knows,

If your talking about .say 20 yrs Rich ,that's not even a generation in human terms ,maybe 8,9 or 10 generations of dogs ,

If a human was bred fastest to fastest for 300 hundred years then Usain might get a bit of competition ,it's as the man says ,nutrition and sports science ,equipment ,more of the globe taking part and an acknowledgment that different body types suit different sports ,I am the perfect build for darts for example .

Darts is probably my favourite sport. 

I remember when players averaging 80-90 would win the big championships, but now they wouldn't get to the quarter finals. 

Taylor was the first to regularly get over 100 average, but now there's a lot get 100 average, and the top players can get over 110 !

What changed ? Well darts got a lot thinner for the weight, thanks to tungsten, and boards improved with thinner wires and lack of staples, leading to slightly bigger scoring areas, but I still think the players skill and accuracy improved. Nine dart finishes are expected now rather than being a rarity.

Of course the banning of smoking and drinking may have helped ! LOL !

Tbf though not many people from the Congo get the opportunity to participate in athletics.

That's an interesting theory ,I wonder if it's ever had any academic research ,also if hybrid vigour is a factor ,I suppose it would be a bit of a taboo subject for any serious academic investigation to get underway .

Not with the commonality Of the average us collegiate freshman year no .
