Well it had to happen . Slinky 2 is no more . Well I hope it’s slinky 2 because I’m done with that place . Two fruitless visits over the weekend and I’d almost resigned myself to not shooting it .
I turned up tonight and lay in wait as usual with the shotgun until it got too dark. I switched on the thermal spotter and started to scan around . I spotted a fox in the neighbouring field on the far hedgerow and then it disappeared, then nothing for ages . I walked out into the paddock and set up the icotec 350 . I returned to my vantage point on top of the flood bank and selected the field mouse . Almost instantly a fox appeared on the far side of the field and started to run across the fence line. I’d already turned the digisight on and was tracking it , I thought if he so much as slows to a trot I’m having a go but it wasn’t going to stop or slow down so shot it on the hoof , “whomp” and it span around did a funny wriggle and then disappeared into the hedge ...... noooo !
I got my thermal and torch and raced over to the other side of the paddock. I’d marked where it got hit and saw some blood , I thought I don’t care if I’ve got to track you to Tewkesbury town centre, I’m not losing you . I followed the blood trail to the hedge and shon the torch through the briar , and there as dead as a nit was slinky 2 . As if to spite me though he’d made it to an almost impenetrable, dense thicket , under normal circumstances I would have left him there but I wanted to show the people their chicken thief .
As you can see a rather scruffy dog fox . They both came out to have a look as they had heard the shot .

I’ve got to say that this was the most difficult fox I’ve encountered. It had been educated and I only had the one place to shoot it . Normally I’ve got large areas where you can get around them and they have to relax at some point .
I never ever shoot foxes on the move , I don’t need to , but last night I thought “what have I got to lose”?
I’ve neglected the shoot because of this varmint . Time to get out and do some proper foxing .

Congratulations that you finally caught up with your nemesis. Must have been some pressure to shoot it on the run too ?

I’m a clay and game shooter and I spent my early shooting life shooting rabbits over spaniels . So the temptation is to give it lead , but with a centre fire it’s straight at it . It all happened fairly quickly, but I was shaking with adrenaline afterwards and it took me ages to get to sleep last night . I think it was Meece who said take it on the run , and he was right . I had no choice really. I’ve shot foxes on the run before but it’s always been a follow up to a miss , so I knew I had it in me , but I don’t care if I never have to do that again .?

Well it only took eleven pages to kill a fox. ?

Well done on getting it sorted!

I have shot quite a few on the run through necessity rather than choice.

I shot a fair few with the Pulsar N750 and quickly learned to allow a small lead because the pulsars camera isn't very quick and you get a little bit of lag. IE: you are shooting at where it has been rather than where it is.

Oh and i would rather shoot one tricky customer than five easy ones.

I was using the pulsar N970lrf which may account for me arse ending it . And I agree about one tricky customer ?
