Must be a nightmare living somewhere you cant leave a fckn door open

There isn't ANYWHERE that an opportunist won't take a chance.  If you think that you are not then one day it most probably happen to you.  I have a friend who was home invaded by three hoodlums at 4.30 am on a bright sunny summers morning ! and it  wasn't pleasant for him (hospitalised) or his Mrs, (knocked about) he didn't expect that but I had warned him that his security was piss poor but he said his two alsatians would ward anyone off.  Did they f**k.!!!   It's pretty good around here and The only thing that I've ever known was a pair of scroates visited an old lady along the road and asked her about antiques ect,  one kept her busy with a story whilst the other ransacked through everywhere.  It's just that our side door is quite close to the access road / path of the cup de sac and I don't want to take unnecessary risks with the siting of weapons in the property.  it's better to prevent something than after the horse has bolted.

Edit.  I don't intend to be a paranoid freak on this.  It is just a sensible precaution.  just like not leaving the keys in your car for someone to go off joyriding in. and then the insurance won't pay out because you left the keys in it. ect

I live in a large city on the edge of a council estate and would pack my bags and f**k off tomorrow if I was to afraid to leave my door open, my back door is open from when I get up to when I go to bed, and I would also shoot my dogs if they allowed someone to enter my house and have a do something like that to me and the misses, the garden gate is the cut off point for the uninvited

Calm down Gladys, obviously some parts of the country are far worse than others for oppertunistic thieving just so happens its very very rare in the village I happen to live, I can and have left all my doors and windows open even overnight on occasions, Ive left my keys in my Defender for a week more than once, front door keys left in the lock when Ive gone to work etc, daresay I might get caught out 1 day but its been ok for the last 50 years

Ok Maureen, count yourself lucky

Thanks for the constructive reply. I hadn't thought about looking to see if there is a  clip available.   If anyone clicks on that link you can sèe the item.  I don't intend for it to be used as a substitute for proper locks when I / we leave the house it is just that the door can be fixed in a position that will allow airflow through the house but not allow others entry. Kind of locked but open. The issue of a key doesn't really come into play because the lock part is inside the hose and you wouldn't get access to it.  they're around £50 which is enough and I could make one but I can't be arsed.  I just wondered if anyone had one or similar or any other bright ideas.

If you're unsure of your surroundings, have a look at alarm mines - they're legal to buy and use.

They can be hidden away, set off with a hidden wire and, loaded with noisy blanks (or whatever) - they'll scare the shit out of anyone that sets them off and alert the whole neighbourhood.

I've got 2 chihuahuas  - they're shite guard dogs but, their ears are bigger than their heads and they raise merry hell if anyone is on the back drive.

.............. I've fallen asleep with the backdoor open with no worries.

I have an alarm gun. I load it with cut down 12 bore cartridges. It isn't actually that loud, I think real blanks are louder, once you cut down a cartridge you loose the compression that causes the bang. Mind you I forget about it and set it off 5 times a week so I'm nervous about using anything louder ?

I'd like some type of motion activated alarm that rings my phone. Just for on the work shop

With this hot weather it would be nice to be able to hold the back door open to allow airflow BUT for it to be secure to stop any chancers getting in.  I found this >>> link ,...  but has anyone any different ideas of know of anything different.

Thanks for that reference.  I can't say that if ever seen anything like that for sale over here.  I've only ever Seen them used in countries like the USA and Australia where it gets blooming hot and it allows free airflow without allowing flies and insects entry.  The thing here in the UK is that next week the weather fronts will be going the other way and we'll be cold again. It's going to be about 25c here in the south over the next few days so it won't be long before we get a hosepipe ban.

Cover the handle with superglue then wire it to the mains with a 15 second delay, you'll know if you've caught anybody as soon as you get back as you'll be greeted by the smell of deep fried burglar....
