Whippet/bedlington puppies

mine spends far more time in cover, hedgerows, brambles, embankments etc than it does running. if I required a more running type lamping etc I would certainly look for a dash of greyhound blood added to it.

Worked in the dales. So there we have it again. Without getting into an argument with anyone over any cross, type or whatever, most dogs, not all obviously, worked in the dales, will NOT have the spee

Beddy/whippet x collie/whippet/bull/grey

I think it's getting less popular among working people. other crosses are more popular and versatile. some prefer pure whippets or grews for rabbits. if you want a dog for lamping and other stuff you

The ones I have been out with are great little dogs. I’ve seen them ferret, lamp and work the hills as bushers. They’re not scared of anything. In their heads they are capable of anything but you can only expect so much from dogs that stand between 19-21 TTS. I have lamped with one many times with Newkid off here. We run big fields but she tries her best and puts in a good shift. They weren’t bred for all round Lurcher work so why expect them to be able to do it. There are still good working lines out there. If I wanted one I would go beddy whippet x beddy whippet from working parents not f1 beddy x whippet. For ratching about I really like them.
good luck in your search

My beddy/whippet lacks a bit of speed, buts that’s down to her small size. As long as you know their limitations there shouldn’t be a problem. Mine hunts well and is very well behaved around the house etc. But I would class her more a a fast bushing type dog, than a lurcher. Saying that I live in Lincolnshire so it’s more suited to larger, faster dogs due to the size of the fields and game about. Saying that, I’m glad I’ve got her.

A good rabbit dog in most dales areas, would see their catch rate dwindle quite substantially, if they were worked in a lot of southern parts of the country. Quite possibly why beddy/whippets have lost favour in many areas around the country. They simply don't have the pace

Ive been in the company of folk and their lurchers that travelled down from more clement climes to muller the easier dales conies, the lurchers bred in the near vicinity of the dales had an habit of catching far,far more than their southern cousins ,the reason for that was possibly the owners knew how to lamp better, they often lamped longer, the mutts knew how to catch more because they caught more and the pace they ran further south would have made them less competitive in the Dales. The Dales lurchers earnt their corn because feck all else could compete with them and thats a fact. There as been several lurchers bred that had the aptitude and ability to catch the amount of rabbits a Dales bred lurcher could, they were bred in the vicinity where the task was far harder.Ive witnessed shit bred Dales lurchers putting southern cousins to shame, the main reason was the mush holding the lamp.

Yea she is a first cross. Whippet mum, beddy sire. She will be two in August. I take her ferreting, bush bearing and mouching with my mates bigger dogs.

sounds very much like mine. I have found all have had a great nose but the first cross is even better in that respect.

They do seem to have a good nose. Mine has only ever caught rabbits but she hunts scent of foxes and munjack like she’s mad for them, even though she has never had hold of one. My old dogs (coursing dogs) didn’t really hunt until they had caught a few and realised they were fair game.

Fred90 where are you from? Loads in Lincolnshire. If you had the ground, you could probably find a munty everyday.

derbyshire. spent a lot of time in Lincolnshire in what my generation call the good times. that's when I used to lamp, now just ferreting and occasional longnetting if numbers are there.
