Quick question for you fred. I know you like your working bred beddy/whippets, so why do you think this type is hard to find? Quote Link to post

I would say poxon on here has answered it many times really. it's a very popular cross among the pet brigade and horsey set. it's the peddlers favourite, a very good seller so being churned out for money from any show beddy and whippet they can find. 5 Quote Link to post

Yep, I understand that. But what I'm trying to get at, is why 'working' bred types are hard to find. Or like you say, as poxon has indeed said, maybe nowadays, unless you know the 'right' people, then it's just pet bred stuff that is available to people? Quote Link to post

I think it's getting less popular among working people. other crosses are more popular and versatile. some prefer pure whippets or grews for rabbits. if you want a dog for lamping and other stuff you don't buy a beddywhippet. they are excellent ferreting dogs, marking working cover picking up short 20 yard dashes. the odd pheasant, squirrel etc. that's all I need from a mutt and they suit me fine. 6 Quote Link to post

The majority of Beddy/Whippets were bred from pets, especially the Beddy side, its only hybrid vigour that ever rescued their working intent.Thats why its so important to source pups lurcher to lurcher bred, still an awful lot of pets bred from but a few genuine litters swim against the tide.Homework, homework and then choose a pup?. 5 Quote Link to post

One of the finest lamping dogs i ever witnessed was a 19" Beddy/Whippet,that hungry, greedy, committed little speedster was a thing to behold,it excelled as a ferreting companion,it got stuck into a few terrier bolts, fair enough it lacked the strength or power to do little than hold but it tried, the rabbits it lamped would put many more recognised types to shame, fair enough it was bred and worked in the Dales and it gained favour from that, the flying blue rag was a machine on lamped bunnies. 1 Quote Link to post

Worked in the dales. So there we have it again. Without getting into an argument with anyone over any cross, type or whatever, most dogs, not all obviously, worked in the dales, will NOT have the speed, quickness, or whatever, that's needed, of dogs worked in several other parts of the country. A good rabbit dog in most dales areas, would see their catch rate dwindle quite substantially, if they were worked in a lot of southern parts of the country. Quite possibly why beddy/whippets have lost favour in many areas around the country. They simply don't have the pace Edited May 24, 2020 by shaaark 8 Quote Link to post
fred90 3,290
I have had several both first cross and beddywhippet x beddywhippet and all mine I have to say lacked a few gears on longer slips, other stuff. 2 Quote Link to post

Was just going to add to my post fred. And I'm talking of 1st x beddy/whippets, not 3/4 whippet Quote Link to post
