Bull lurcher 15 months old

Hello new to the forum.

I've been running with my dog a fair bit and he will play/get on with 99% of the dogs he comes across. His recall is good and will follow me for a 10 mile off the lead run no probs, occasionally he will be 20 yards away maybe sniff another dog but will come straight to my whistle and most of the time is within touching distance.

This morning he mouthed at this young dog and the owner panicked picked his dog up and another group of women dog walkers started giving me some grief.  The dog wasn't injured although it sounded rough . He came to my whistle and then I had a bit of an argument with the group. If I see that dog again I will put mine on a lead as the owner said it is twice mine has attacked his but no injuries. He then also did the same to a French bulldog that was on a flexi lead in the park again no biting just looked bad, again he comes quickly to my whistle.

Is it me or have people gone soft ? I dont really want to have him on the lead at all times. There has been plenty of times when other dogs growl and  give him stick and he completely ignores it.

This morning he seemed to have it about him. Hes been brilliant but is this something to worry about that may escalate ?

Thanks

It doesn’t make people soft to be worried bout there dog , to be fair if someone’s dog kept grabbing or mouthing my dog if tell ye owner get it on a led as even if your dog isn’t sinking his teeth in

My bitch has done similar.... Think she's just bored, never paid no attention to other dogs... But she's started stopping and smelling where ever another dog has pissed etc.... And running up to them.

Had a lurcher do that to the neighbours yorkie many moons ago unfortunately he hadn't a soft mouth and his retrieve was questionable at the best of times.

There's a lot more pet dogs than when I started in late 70s and a lot more opinion with it. I think we have to adapt, lurcher play can look aggressive and that will upset some. it can be actually aggressive as well, watch for the nasty habit of "playfully" grabbing dogs that won't play. IMO when scared owners rush to put theirs on the lead it makes aggression more likely so I avoid them as much as possible. However it's important they do have some freedom and socialise so hopefully you can find some like minded people with playful dogs and all should be fine

On running with your lurcher. We run with our Collie X, he loves it but it does get their adrenaline up and I use a harness for moments when he needs to be on the lead but you want to keep running. It's not cheap but a Dragratten harness works well and a proper canicross belt would help if your dog is a strong puller. Looks a great dog, not obviously edgy, Good luck

Thanks for that I will have a look at the canicross belt . He is a puller, especially until the first field then I let him off.

He goes nuts howling when I come down in my running kit and grab his lead

Be glad when this shits over and they leave them in the garden like before this lockdown ??

It doesn’t make people soft to be worried bout there dog , to be fair if someone’s dog kept grabbing or mouthing my dog if tell ye owner get it on a led as even if your dog isn’t sinking his teeth in to there dog it can cause there dog to start fretting around other dogs and end up biting out fret , I have no problem with dogs off a lead and mine we’re always off a lead but they never went up to other dogs and tried To play rough , if he comes to your whistle try whistling him befor he goes and try’s rough up another persons dog, or better still put it on lead in public places , as sooner or later your dogs going play rough with someone’s dog who doesn’t like it and a) there dog going sink it teeth in to yours or b) there owner going send his foot in to your dog

Keep it on a lead don't really understand why u have to have him off the lead when ur running, all the chavs in Liverpool let their staffies wonder round off the lead an it does my f***ing head in, if one attacked any of mine I'd shoot it on the spot, I've had bull xs that have been c**ts with other dogs they are not here now and wouldn't have another in my kennels ?

I understand what your saying mate but 99% is 100% and if it’s not 100% it’s better to be safe that sorry

One day another dog might latch onto him and things will get out of hand. Thats what happened to mine and trying to prise him off a bulldog was no fun. Luckly I new the guy and he new his dog was at fault cause it ran out and piled into him.  But he went from running away from a pug and hiding behind a tree to a right pain in arse now. Other dogs only have to look at him and best behaved dogs go loopy they just no his intentions aint great. So yea get ahead of the game and avoid it starting

Lots of Running dogs will mouth the back of the necks of other dogs while playing it’s in their nature. But the owners of the other  dogs just see a great big fit looking  dog attacking their beloved pooch. Also by picking it up and swinging it round getting a bit excited doesn’t help matters and only escalates things. At the end of the day it’s probably best not to put yourself in that position with other less knowledgeable dog owners.

Also what time you doing 10 miles in?

My dogs aren't nasty but just for argument sake or no arguments I should say they stay on a lead until I find a place to let them off and of the day there animals they'll all have times when there's gonna not be them selves the bitch is fairly young maybe it's just her age she probably trying it on best bet just lead her up when in public parks or go somewhere out the way

Thanks for the feed back.

When I run with the dog he isn't completely off the lead as if I see another on the lead, I generally whistle him and put him on the leash until I pass. I mainly run through a couple of parks get him on lead on pavements which isn't for long until I get out along a rural river path.

Often hes more of a nause to other dogs on the lead gets a bit mouthy but usually fine off it.

I took my garmin out other day just to calculate mileage but didnt start timer as only wanted mileage. I ran 10.5 in about 80 minutes with him. As I roughly noted time. I was quite happy with that and pleasantly surprised as I got a bit heavy recently.

Not sure if you are a runner but I'm aiming to do a 10k without dog in 36 minutes when this covid 9 clears. Best so far is 38.49 so a bit to do.

I'm still pissed off now about this morning I thought hes been brilliant recently and it kills two birds with one stone. Let myself down arguing about it too ?

Anything under 40 mins for a 10k is great time. I run but more into longer distances because I’m not fast and just plod on and prefer trails than roads.  Good luck with your 10k and your dog who looks in great shape btw.
