Well our first shoot of the year went well. It was cold but dry and a bit of sun appeared. Bag was 122 head comprising of 57 duck 56 pheasant 7 partridge and 2 pigeon. My own contribution wa

It’s been frosty the last couple of mornings, it’s very welcome , hopefully it will kill a few bugs . Unfortunately the Maize and cover crops don’t like it and they will soon be unviable as a drive .

Well first day over and the last for at least 5 weeks, we were light on beaters and guns today as it was a last minute thing but we made the best of it. It was a bit different with the social distancing and no stopping at 11, but it didn’t put to much of a dampener on things, the drive before lunch produced some lovely birds with my sheep farmer mate Mosh in the thick of it, bagging himself 10 birds on that drive, he was in the action on the last drive of the day, taking another 8, I didn’t think they would fly very well today with no wind but they did fly well for most of the drives, I had a little go myself and managed a couple, longshanx also bagged himself a few so in the end a good day was had by all, the count was 50 birds picked with a few more not found, so that’s me sorted for pheasant curry for a while. We just need to be able to keep the birds on the shoot for the next 5 weeks now ?

Considering the birds have never been put up before they didn't do to bad. Some flying low and back on themselves, so it was pick your shot carefully. The 2 drives Morris was on it couldn't have gone any better for him. Perfect pegs and plenty of birds. The last drive I just stood and watched him in action, one bird after the other dropping from the air, what a sight.

Let's hope it gets back to normal in December ??????

My birds will be getting breasted at the weekend. Mrs has already eyed them up for tea? we were having steak but she's changed her mind, we are having pheasant breast wrapped in parma ham, pan-fried in butter then finished in the oven instead ??

Good to see Stavross and the boys had a good day . I went beating on the local commercial shoot . They had a good day . We were warned that they weren’t the best shots and it might be a struggle, but they shot quite well . It wasn’t a good flying day for the birds , no wind and clear sky , bright sunshine, but the birds flew surprisingly well . A different day to my last day on Saturday, which saw us get soaking wet , however the guns enjoyed themselves and we exceeded the bag and there seems to be plenty of birds around.
We’ve got a long break now and hope to be shooting again on the 5th December, all being well. We will just have to cram our shooting into December and January.
On a different note , I was feeding this morning and saw my first woodcock . I always reckon that I start to see them around bonfire night , or the first moon in November . I was driving along a track in the beechwood and it got up off the track and for a moment I wondered what it was , but it’s undulating flight gave it away . Great to see them back , and it reminded me that I’ve got another woodcock day booked in , in Cheshire later on , can’t wait for that .

Watched them arrive at night before now and as you say, first moon in November. They've  been so knackered I've been able to catch them to have a look at them.

I've noticed it can be later in November if there are strong westerly winds on the first moon.

I have just been sent a link to a GWCT blog . And bugger me , Packham has told a pack of lies to the media and claimed some sort of victory, banning game shooting near SSSI when nothing could be further from the truth . In fact nothing has been banned. He really is a pathetic, sad little man ,“ better stick to French kissing vermin Chwis “.

Watched Autumn watch last night and Cwis claimed little owls mainly eat worms .Not so Cwis .I’ve seen 4 or 5 recently at night that had mice and one with a small bird taken at its roost I guess .
Id like to know where that leuchistic badger is though ,space on the wall ☺️

Are not little owls an introduced species ?

Little owls are not indigenous to this country . They were introduced towards the end of the nineteenth century. I knew they were introduced, I just googled when , I’m not that clever .
We have a lot locally, and I love them . They are the best fox alarm. If Charlie is about the go apeshit , and mob it . Having said that I’m familiar with them , I’ve no idea what they eat , I’m not a twitcher , I see them , smile and get on with my day , I’ve not got the time or inclination to spend hours observing them .
