Stavross 15,361
Up at the shoot again, managed to get another ride cut, time seems to be ticking away and there’s still a lot to do before the birds come I brought the hatstand semi with me to have a go at the pigeons but with this wind they are wings back and gone, I connected with 2 for about 12 shots, I did manage this skinny rabbit that bolted from the wheat, so that’s gone in one of the traps i came across are pheasant nest, surrounded by feathers, it had nested no more than 5 meters from a badger set, they really are thick Edited June 28, 2020 by Stavross 2 Quote Link to post

shovel leaner 7,650
First lot of birds arrived today , and very nice they look too . Nice even size , well feathered and generally a picture of health . Looks like they are eating and drinking plenty so it’s up to me now to keep them that way . something I’ve got in the habit of for that last few years is spending the first couple of nights in my truck , parked up by the pen . I have a sit and watch till dark and then a bit of a scan with the thermal for a while and then recline the seat and try and sleep . What has happened in the past is the birds aren’t up to roost yet and tuck up on the wire , Charlie comes along and spooks them they jug out of the pen and I loose birds . By being next to the pen I can hear the birds getting spooked and shoot the offending fox . I have had good success with this in the past , in particular it’s cubs that do the most damage but mum and dad also join them if they are about . I’ve seen foxes go into a killing frenzy and take not a bit of notice of shots being fired. I will let you know how I get on , if I don’t see one that’s good and if I see one and shoot it that’s good , if I see one and miss it ..... not so good , trouble is there is a lot of long grass and doc which could cause a problem. 7 Quote Link to post

shovel leaner 7,650
No Foxes last night, but the birds were startled and spooked by a Tawny owl , on checking the pen this morning I found a dead poult which had been killed by an owl . Quote Link to post
Sausagedog 7,381
Got this badge too mate. Owls can be fun too. We use to hang an item of clothing we had been wearing all day up wind. Quote Link to post

I’ve tried radios, cds hanging in branches, strip lighting connected to the fence wire , you name it , haven’t tried the clothing thing though . Talking to other keepers and they all reckon it’s a territorial thing with Tawny owls , all of a sudden there are masses of poults dumped on their patch , but he killing tends to stop after a day or so . That’s been my experience too . 1 Quote Link to post
